A wife cheats and sets her sights on a political dream, her husband seeks revenge.

My wife Kim and I, Peter Bannister, had been happily married for eighteen years when things went wrong. I met Kim when we were both at college, after dating for a few years we got married. Kim's father passed away before I met her, Kim's mother was still alive and not keen on me as husband material.

The problem with me was I had no interest in politics, other than voting at local and general elections. Kim's parents had both been actively involved in local politics for many years. Both had been councillors at one stage, for her part Kim didn't seem to show an interest in following them.

I worked as a surveyor for a construction company, Kim worked as a senior administrator for a local firm of accountants. Just over a year after we married, Kim gave birth to our daughter, Andrea. At the time Kim had some problems, the doctor advised against her getting pregnant again. Andrea was delivered by caesarean section, Kim had her tubes fixed at the same time. Apart from the time off when Andrea was a baby Kim worked, as Andrea got older Kim adjusted her hours around our daughters schooling.

My parents passed away when Andrea was very young. My father died of cancer, months later my mother caught a chest infection. This turned into pneumonia and she lost the will to live, thirteen months after burying my father, my mother was laid to rest in the same plot. Janice, Kim's mother was a frequent visitor to our house, despite not getting along I tolerated the woman. I overheard her tell Kim one time that she thought Kim could have chosen a better husband. I didn't claim to be the best, but I know Kim could have married a man a lot worse than myself. I told her as much after overhearing her opinion of me, I also said I didn't have a very high opinion of her.

Throughout our married life Kim got involved in several local causes, usually leading campaigns against closures. When the council wanted to waste millions on resurfacing a road that was in good condition, at the expense of the local library, Kim led the charge on that. The library was saved and the road to this day is still in good condition, and has still not been resurfaced.

Whenever Kim was involved in anything like that I chose not to get involved, as I said it wasn't my thing. As Andrea got older Kim tried to get her involved, to her credit Andrea helped to a point. She was okay with putting fliers in envelopes, but going out with her mother knocking on doors was out of the question. Kim put it down to Andrea not wanting to be seen by her friends getting involved in stuff, I knew the real reason was Andrea just wasn't interested.

Our current local Labour MP (Member of Parliament) was Andrew Winkworth. Winkworth was a local lad who stayed in the area and did a fair bit for the people, he was an okay guy from what I could see. He appeared to be happily married with three children, two sons and a daughter. His wife was a plain but attractive woman, she was quite often pictured by his side. Although we both voted for the guy, neither of us had an opinion of him, he just seemed like the right man for the job.

When the next general election was due the Conservative party fielded a new candidate, Simon Brotherton-Holmes. He wasn't a local person, the party chose him as they thought he would swing the vote in their favour. I didn't like the guy from the word go, he struck me as a flash git who was all talk. Kim and her mother thought the sun shone out of his arse.

Brotherton-Holmes had a campaign manager, some creepy guy who reminded me of Mr Bean. With some pressure from her mother, Kim got involved in the campaign. Andrea and I showed no interest, Kim was almost giddy about being involved. Until this point we had always been a close family, Kim and I enjoyed date nights. We always spent as much time together as work and school would permit.

Kim started to work at home in the evenings, Andrea and I were left to spend time together. I did mention to Kim that this campaign was taking a lot of her time.

"Yes. Yes, I know. Once the election is over things will get back to normal, just let me do this please, Peter."

I let Kim spend time on whatever she was doing, I complained again when she cancelled a date night for the bloody campaign.

"I told you when this is over things will get back to normal. It's important that Simon gets elected, he will be good for the community."

"He bloody better be, given the amount of time you alone are spending on his campaign." Kim shooed me away and returned to whatever she was doing.

Several times she met with Brotherton-Holmes and the other people involved in the campaign. I got annoyed again when she started spending more evenings away from home.

"Kim, can you give this campaign a break for a few days, please? It would be nice if you could spend some time with your family."

"I told you when the election is over we can get back to normal, now leave me to get on with this important task!" I was dismissed like a naughty child.

That pissed me off, even Andrea was fed up with her mother. For the last few months Kim was barely at home, she went to work then out again after dinner. Most nights she arrived back home just after eleven PM. Our sex life took a hit as she was always tired, I was just tired of having a part-time wife. It was Andrea who put the suspicion in my head.

"Dad, do you think mum is more involved with this MP than she should be? I mean she is never home anymore." Andrea was seventeen, going on twenty-five. She was very level-headed and smart. Like her mother she could be stubborn, usually to her benefit.

I reassured Andrea that wasn't the case, even though I did wonder if she might be correct with her suspicions. To satisfy my own curiosity and put my mind at rest, I employed a private investigator. Jim Willis was an experienced investigator, if there was any evidence he would find it. We planned for him to follow Kim for two weeks. I figured if she was doing something wrong two weeks would be long enough to find out. I didn't tell Andrea what was happening, just in case she slipped up.

Kim carried on with her important campaign work, Andrea and I stayed at home. It was two weeks later that I visited Jim Willis, I hoped beyond all hope that I was wrong. I knew by the look on his face it was not good news.

"I'm sorry, Mr Bannister. It appears that your suspicions are correct. Your wife is involved in a sexual affair with Simon Brotherton-Holmes." Jim slid an envelope across the desk. "My report and the pictures are inside, there are also some audio and video recordings. I wouldn't watch them if I were you, but that's your choice."

I paid Jim's bill and left for the office, reading the report would have to wait until later this evening.

Kim left to go out after dinner, the campaign needed her, or so she said. Andrea went to her bedroom as she had homework to do. I sat in my office reading the investigators report. After listening to some of the audio recordings, I worked out the affair started a few weeks after Kim started working for Brotherton-Holmes. Listening to Kim talk it was clear that her mother had a large part in pushing them together. I was beyond pissed off, it was lucky Kim was not at home.

I have no idea how Jim got the photos and video recordings, I'm just glad that he did. The pillow talk after sex was revealing. Through this I learned Kim had aspirations of being Mrs Brotherton-Holmes. Clearly us getting back to normal after the election was out of the question. Watching the video recordings killed my love for Kim, immediately.

I had to practically beg Kim for oral sex, although she was happy for me to go down on her. In one clip the shithead dropped his trousers, Kim's mouth was on his cock in seconds. I watched as she sucked him, the bitch even swallowed his load. I completely lost it after watching another video clip, it was Kim's time of the month and she let him have her arse. I had just closed the recording down when Andrea knocked on the door, she knew something was seriously wrong.

I sat and explained about the private investigator, and what he had revealed. Andrea was upset that Kim would do such a thing, like me she agreed her grandmother played a part in it.

"What are you going to do dad?"

"Divorce your mother, that's a guarantee." I replied. Andrea nodded, she understood how I felt.

"What about him?" Andrea asked, the look of hatred was clear to see.

"I'm going to ruin him. I don't know how or when, but it will happen." Andrea hugged me, she said she was sorry and that she understood.

"If you need me to do anything Dad, let me know. I hate mum for doing this to us."

I went to bed early not bothering to wait for Kim to arrive home, nothing she could say was going to put this right. I had started working on a plan to divorce Kim and screw shithead at the same time. The following day Andrea and I acted as normal, Kim told us the campaign was almost over. The election was two weeks away.

I found a solicitor and had divorce papers drawn up. We split our bank accounts 50/50, I was staying in the house with Andrea. I didn't offer any spousal support, to counter this I didn't ask Kim to pay child support, albeit Andrea would be eighteen in seven months.

That evening I thought about how to publicly shame Kim and her shithead lover. I explained to Andrea what I intended to do, Andrea thought it was a great idea. Andrea and I both agreed that acting normal around Kim was tough, considering she was spending so much time out of the house it should have been easy.

Election night was two nights away. This evening Brotherton-Holmes was giving a big speech in the local community centre, there were also going to be questions from the audience. One of the audience members was Don Matthews. Don was a reporter for the local gazette. He was old school and when he got his teeth into a story, he didn't let it go. The first batch of questions were stuff you would expect, local people asking about local issues. Andrea and I sat at the back of the hall, from there we could see Kim, Janice and a few people sat at a table.

Andrea gently squeezed my hand and gave me a reassuring smile.

Don raised his hand before speaking. "Don Matthews, reporter for the local gazette. Mr Brotherton-Holmes, would you like to comment on the rumour of a sexual affair between yourself and a married member of your campaign staff?" Shithead looked stumped by the question, I could see Kim and her mother whispering to each other.

"Absolutely preposterous! There is no truth in the rumour at all." Shithead was blustering, his campaign manager looked worried. As he spoke a gentleman approached the table where the staff were seated. The man spoke to Kim before handing her an envelope, he turned and walked away. Kim had a worried look on her face as she opened the envelope, that look turned to horror whens he saw the contents. Inside was a petition for divorce along with a copy of the investigators report, just for good measure i put copies of the photos in there as well.

Kim looked up and stared straight at me, both Andrea and I returned her stare with a smile. Don Matthews asked shithead the same question, he declined to answer and returned to the table. We watched as a very animated but whispered conversation took place between him, Kim and her mother.

Don Matthews continued with his questions, Andrea and I stood up and left. The noise inside the community centre was getting louder, we could hear people calling for answers to Don's question.

Andrea and I sat drinking coffee in the kitchen. "Dad, what do you think mum will do now?"

"No idea. I would imagine at some point she will want to talk to me or us, as for tonight I imagine she will keep her head down and go to your grandmothers for the night."

I couldn't have been more wrong with my assumption of what Kim would do. Minutes later she and her mother burst into the house.

"You bastard!" Her mother screamed at me.

"Why Peter? Why do that, tonight of all nights?" I stood up and glared at the two of them.

"Firstly Janice, you do not get to walk into my house and yell at me. If you cannot keep quiet, then I suggest you leave right now. As to why I did what I did tonight, that should be obvious. I wanted to expose you and shithead for what you are, he is a lying bastard and you are a slut!"

Janice stared at me in silence. Kim didn't seem to know what to say.

"I know all about your dreams to become his wife. I can just imagine it in a few years when he gets a photocall and you are right beside him, well don't let me stand in your way. You have said and done things with him you never did with me, as far as I am concerned he can have you. Now please go upstairs and pack your bags, Janice, I want you to wait in your car."

"I'll do no such thing. I am going to wait here!"

I walked past Janice and opened the front door, she protested as I gently shoved her outside.

"You introduced Kim to shithead, this is as much your fault as it is hers." I closed the door and turned to KIm. "Go on then, get packing. After all, you don't want to keep your mother waiting."

Andrea stared at Kim as she turned away and walked upstairs, I walked back to the kitchen.

"It'll be okay dad." Andrea hugged me.

We both looked up as Kim stood at the bottom of the stairs. "I'll come back for the rest of my stuff, I have enough to last me a few days. Peter, can we sit and talk at some point?"

I stood up. "We can, but not right now or tomorrow, it's too soon."

The story was all over the Gazette the following day. It didn't name Kim as the woman involved, but it showed a picture of her being served the divorce papers. From what was printed I imagined the evening was a massive PR failure, shithead was spirited out of the door to avoid further questions.

Two nights later Andrea and I stood in the community centre as the votes were counted, the returning officer called for quiet. Everyone stood as he gave his official speech before announcing the votes. There were four candidates in our area, Labour, Conservative, Green Party and one other.

"Bryan Green, Independence Party 150 votes. Lydia Boot, Green Party 1968 votes. Simon Brotherton-Holmes, Conservative Party 2010 votes. Andrew Winkworth, Labour Party 21655 votes. I declare that Andrew Winkworth is re-elected as the member of parliament for this constituency."

The labour party supporters were in full celebration, Andrew Winkworth was shaking hands with his team and supporters. On the other side of the hall, the shithead looked like a broken man, he had Kim, Janice and two others for company. Kim signalled for Andrea to join her, I said it was up to her.

Andrea walked over and spoke with Kim, Janice stayed quiet and stood off to the side. Eventually the shithead introduced himself, by now I had walked closer to try and hear what was being said.

"You must be Andrea? I have heard a lot about you. I'm Simon," he stuck out his hand.

"I know who you are." Andrea glared at him. "You're the snake that caused all the trouble." Andrea slapped him around the face and stormed off. I caught up to her by the doorway.

"Feel better for that?" I asked grinning.

"Yes I do. I barely know him and I hate him already!" Andrea hugged me and burst into tears, this was the first time she had shown any real emotion over what happened. When Andrea stopped crying we walked home, neither of us speaking.

Kim called around at the weekend to collect the rest of her stuff, she informed me she would sign the divorce papers after we had talked. As I wanted the divorce over and done I agreed to meet her somewhere neutral, just the two of us.

I was sitting at a table in the corner of a local coffee shop, i saw Kim walk in. She looked around and smiled when she approached.

"Hello Peter, how are you?"

"How do you think I am?" I replied. "I thought I had a good marriage and a loving wife, that was until shithead turned up. I must say you didn't take much persuasion to cheat on me, your mother must be really convincing." Kim couldn't look at me. "You wanted to talk Kim, start talking."

"I just wanted to say I am sorry for the way things turned out. When I started working on Simon's campaign it was just another cause, he told mum that he liked me, and she convinced me to start seeing him. I know I should have said something, but I couldn't bring myself to tell you. I know I am a coward. I am truly sorry for hurting you and Andrea, I hope that one day you can both forgive me."

"You knew what you were doing, so did your mother. Forgive you, I don't think so. I will never forgive you and Janice for this. Whether Andrea will ever forgive you or not is her decision, but right now she has no respect for you, Janice or shithead."

"Please stop calling him names. Simon is really nice, if you got to know him I think you might even like him."

"Are you mad? Get to know him, i wouldn't piss on him if he caught fire. You and he are welcome to each other, do me a favour and take that dragon of a mother with you!"

"Peter, I really hoped we could part as friends."

"Yeah, well you know what they say. Wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which one fills up first. Now if you have nothing sensible to say I have things to do." I looked at Kim waiting for her reply.

Kim handed me an envelope. "The signed divorce papers are inside. Please give this to Andrea for me?" Kim handed me a small envelope.

"Goodbye Kim." I turned and walked away.

That evening I passed Andrea the envelope from Kim, she looked at it before deciding to open it up. I watched Andrea as she read through the letter.

"That's never going to happen!" Andrea tucked the letter back in the envelope. "Mum has apologised and given me the address where she will be living, I have an invitation to visit anytime. If she thinks I am visiting her at his house, she can think again."

Our divorce was final after six months, true to her word Andrea never visited her mother. Unusually i kept a watch on the news for anything about shithead. I was able to work out that his party had called him in to explain himself, they were stunned at the massive difference in votes. I don't know if he was punished or not, being as he came from a rich family he wouldn't be hurt financially. A year after our divorce, Kim married shithead. I knew she would be financially secure for life. Was she truly happy? I don't know and I don't care. Andrea is away at University, she still refuses to visit her mother. As a compromise she meets Kim in a coffee shop, provided that shithead is not there.

Janice still lives locally, we pass in the street but don't speak. I know when it all came out that she had a hand in ruining my marriage, she lost a few friends, as did Kim. It didn't affect Kim so much as she moved to London. As for me, I am not dating or seeing anyone. Who knows what the future holds? I might get involved if I meet the right person.
