<strong><u>Telephone</u></strong>

<em>The following story centres mostly on a cheating wife and her daughter. Although it's exaggerated, I based it on a real life divorce between two people I know.</em>

Jim Mellor sat discussing the day ahead with his daughter Julie. Since his wife Maggie had left him for another man, Julie picked up a lot of the household tasks her mother used to do.

"I'm going to do the grocery shopping. I'll start on the laundry when I get back home, what plans do you have Dad?"

"I'll get the grass cut and tidy up the garden. Later today I need to get my office sorted out, there is stuff in there I no longer want or need." Jim was interrupted by Julie's phone ringing.

"Oh God, it's her," Julie sighed as she picked up the phone.

"Hello mother. What do you want?"

"Oh um. I was going to ask if we could meet up. Maybe you could come over here as it is your birthday soon? I cannot believe you will be twenty-one this year."

"I will meet you somewhere for lunch, there is no way I am coming to lowlife's house."

"Please do not refer to Tom as lowlife. After all, when we get married he will become your step-father."

"That's a title he gets for marrying you. It doesn't mean I have to have any contact with him. Now when do you want to meet for lunch?"

"I was thinking of next weekend, is that good for you Julie?"

"Sorry I can't do it next weekend. Ryan is taking me away for the weekend as a treat. The following weekend I am having a birthday party. It will have to be the weekend after that."

"I wasn't aware you were having a party. I haven't received my invitation."

"The party was planned weeks ago. The invitations were sent out at the same time. Most people have said they will be there."

"Has your Aunt Linda been invited?"

"Yes of course she has. She replied to say her and Uncle Mike will be there."

"Oh that's strange. I spoke to her yesterday and she never mentioned it to me."

"Uh huh."

"Okay not to worry. Maybe I will just turn up on the night."

"That's your choice Mother. I wouldn't advise you to bring lowlife with you. I know Dad is a mild mannered man, it's worth remembering everyone has a breaking point."

"Okay I will turn up alone if that's how it's going to be."

"Okay Mother, I have to go as I have things to do. Goodbye." Julie disconnected the call as her father smiled at her.

"Did you tell your mother where the party will be?"

"No way. Let her work it out for herself. I am going shopping Dad, I'll see you later." Julie kissed her father on the cheek and left the house.

<strong><u>Three Weeks Later</u></strong>

(Ringtone) The Bitch is Back.

"Hello Mother."

"Hello dear. I'm sorry you had to cancel the party. When Tom dropped me off the house was in darkness, is everything okay Julie?"

"Everything is fine. We had the party in a function room at the Willows Hotel, there were too many people to host it at home."

"You never said it was in a hotel!"

"You never asked. As you said you would arrive on the night I presumed you knew where it was."

"Oh well, never mind. Did you have a nice time?"

"Yes it was great having all my friends and family there."

"How was your weekend away with Ryan?"

"That was excellent. We had a nice meal and went to the theatre on Saturday night. On Sunday we did some tourist stuff. We were on the London Eye when Ryan proposed to me."

"Oh that's wonderful news. So when will you be getting married?"

"We are not sure yet. We are trying to sort out dates that suit family and friends."

"That's a good idea. Let me know when and where the wedding will be please?"

"Uh huh."

"I have to go dear as Tom is waiting for me. Speak soon, bye."

"What did your mother have to say?" Jim asked with a wry grin.

"Oh she wasn't happy that I didn't tell her where we held the party. She got lowlife to drive her here but they went back home as the house was in darkness." Julie laughed. "I told her Ryan proposed, I didn't tell her where we are planning to get married."

Jim roared out laughing. "She is going to shit herself when she finds out!"

"By then it will be too late Dad."

Julie heard nothing else from her mother for several months, she hoped that she had finally got the hint and would stop calling. Those hopes evaporated when Julie received a Christmas card along with a gift card for her favourite clothing store. Julie responded by sending a cheap card to her mother, there was no mention of Tom

<strong><u>Three Months Later</u></strong>

(Ringtone) The Bitch is Back.

"Hello Mother!"

"Hello Julie. I see you have changed your name on your Facebook profile, does this mean you are married already?"

"Yes mother. Ryan and I got married three weeks ago."

"Well thank you very much for letting me know. A mother should never miss her own daughter's wedding day. I know it would have been strange for your father and I to be in the same room but surely you could have accepted it for one day? I hope it's not too much to ask if I can see some of the pictures from the day?"

"Of course not. I will be posting them on Facebook very soon. I do have one I can send you now, hold on a moment." Julie located a picture and sent it to her mother.

"Where was this taken?" Julie's mother asked.

"That was on the beach just after the ceremony."

"On the beach! Where on earth did you get married?"

"Saint Lucia."

"Saint Lucia! My God that must have cost a small fortune?"

"I wouldn't know mother. I think it would be rude to ask Dad how much it cost him."

"Your father paid for the wedding. How? Who is that standing next to your father?"

"Yes Dad paid for the wedding. The lady standing next to him is his girlfriend Cheryl, they have been dating for a few months now."

Jim, Ryan and Cheryl were present in the room, all of them were trying not to laugh. Jim had to leave the room for fear of roaring out with laughter.

"Where did your father meet her?"

"Dad met Cheryl when he joined a support group to help him get over you leaving him for lowlife, her husband did the same to her so they have helped each other through it." Julie heard her mother mutter something. "As you missed the wedding you had better come along to the reception we are having for those people who couldn't make it to Saint Lucia, it will be in two weeks at the Radisson hotel. Please do not bring lowlife with you."

"Erm, erm. Yes, okay dear I will see you at the reception." Julie disconnected the call.

"Do you think she will show up?" Ryan asked.

"Most definitely. I told her not to bring him. We will have to see if she listened or not."

Two weeks later the reception was in full swing when Maggie walked in accompanied by her lover Tom, Julie stormed across to her mother and stood in her way.

"Mother, I asked you not to bring lowlife with you. He leaves now or you both leave. I don't care either way."

"Julie, can we please talk outside?" Julie nodded and followed her mother into the foyer.

"You wanted to talk, carry on, I am listening." Julie stood looking at her mother with a defiant look on her face.

"I am sick of the way you act towards Tom, he is my partner and your soon to be stepfather. You could show him some respect."

"Show him some respect. You must be joking. I will never show him any respect. I blame him for breaking up our family, although you jumped ship as soon as you realised he had money." Julie stared at her mother who stood there open mouthed.

"I asked you not to bring him with you tonight. For some reason you ignored me and bought him along. When you walked out on Dad and me for him you lost any right to be involved in anything I do. You were not invited to the wedding, as I didn't want you there. I didn't want you here either but I gave in due to pressure from Grandma and Grandpa. Get used to this mother, as I no longer want anything to do with you or him!" Julie pointed at Tom. "For your information Dad was able to pay for everything as he won a half share of the euro millions jackpot, lucky really as it was after the divorce was final. At least he didn't have to share it with you."

Maggie burst into tears and ran from the hotel closely followed by Tom.

"Everything okay?" Jim asked Julie as she entered the function room.

"Everything is good Dad, I just told Mum a few home truths. Now let's get on and enjoy the evening."
