Stories about transsexuals and transvestites typically involve one or more standard themes concerned with such characters' treatment of themselves, their treatment by others, their treatment toward others, the events and circumstances of their transitional period, their outing themselves or being outed by others, their sexual lives, their roles (social and sexual), and related topics, most of which are summed up by the following list. Where applicable, I have included the title of one of more stories (on Literotica) as an example of a narrative that is based upon such a storyline.

Abuse: A tranny is subjected to emotional, physical, sexual, and/or verbal abuse ("At Risk").

Acceptance: A tranny is accepted by another or others (for example, a young man brings a tranny home to meet his parents, and they accept her). (This storyline involves the acceptance by others rather than the tranny's acceptance of her own transgender status and nature.) ("My Brother, My Sister

Appreciation: A tranny is appreciated by a "straight" man or another ("At Risk," "Beefy Buns," "Boy Meets Girl").

Blackmail or extortion: A tranny who wants to remain in the closet is blackmailed or extorted ("All You Can Eat," "Teacher's Pet," "Everybody's Somebody Sometime.")

Chance encounter: A tranny finds romance or a relationship as a result of a chance encounter with a "straight" man. (In this storyline, she is the seduced, rather than the seducer.) ("End of the Line," "The Best Policy," "Triptych," "Two For One")

Conflicted emotions: A tranny feels conflicted about her transgender status or nature. ("A Reconciliation," "Boy Meets Girl," "Everybody's Somebody Sometime")

Disapproval: A straight man, offered a chance at true love, rejects the tranny who offers it ("Boy Meets Girl," "Samantha")

Discrimination: A transitioning tranny learns about chauvinism, misogyny, and sexism ("Boy Meets Girl," "My Brother, My Sister," "Picture Perfect")

Discovery: Someone discovers the tranny's "secret" (she has a cock and balls) ("At Risk," "Beefy Buns," "Boy Meets Girl," "Femme Fatale," "Samantha")

Documentary: A tranny's life story (or part of it) is told as a documentary or a biography, written or electronic.

Double identity: A tranny alternately lives as a man and a woman ("Two For One").

Education: In telling a story about a tranny, the author seeks to educate his or her readers about transvestites and/or transsexuals.

Exhibitionism: A tranny enjoys shocking people by displaying her unusual charms "Size Matters").

Exploitation: A tranny is forced into prostitution.

Exposure: A third party catches a transvestite or a transsexual cross dressing and/or "outs" him or her to another or to others.

False self-esteem: A tranny appreciates herself because she is admired by another or others (for example, she is an exotic dancer whom her audience admires.) ("The Dancing Diva")

First time: A tranny recalls her first cross-dressing or sexual experience.

Loss of virginity: A tranny loses her virginity. (This storyline differs from that of the first time storyline by describing and narrating, rather than merely recalling, the actual loss of virginity; moreover, the first time storyline may involve a subject other than the loss of the tranny's virginity, such as her first cross-dressing experience or the first time she accepted transgender status or nature.)

Love: A tranny finds her Prince Charming or knight in shining armor ("At Risk," "The Best Policy")

Magic: Through magical or scientific means, a man is transformed into a woman ("Charisma," "Charisma and Tiffany")

Masquerade: A man dresses as a woman for a Halloween party, a masquerade ball, or a part in a play or movie.

Novel experience: A tranny provides a man (or a woman) with his (or her) first experience with a shemale. (This storyline differs from that of the first time experience and the loss of virginity because it focuses upon the tranny's partner rather than upon the tranny herself.) ("Beefy Buns," "The Best Policy")

Outing oneself: A tranny reveals herself to be a transvestite or a transsexual to his parents, friends, or others ("A Reconciliation, "Film at Eleven," "Beefy Buns," "Boy Meets Girl," "The Best Policy," The New Hire")

Payment of debt: As a result of losing a bet, a man must dress as a woman.

Punishment: A judge (or a mother) sentences an offender to dress as a female.

Rape: A tranny is ravished, perhaps in a prison.

Respect through sacrifice: A tranny must sacrifice something important to her to maintain her dignity and gain the (perhaps grudging) respect of others ("Leading Lady").

Revenge: A tranny avenges herself upon her tormentor or persecutor ("Everybody's Somebody Sometime"). Role-playing: A man dresses as a woman solely to please his lover. Role-reversal: Made to dress and act as a woman, a male (not a shemale) learns what it's like to be a woman (or a transwoman).

Self-respect: Pressured to be false to herself or her values, a tranny shows her respect for herself by insisting upon being who--and what--she is ("Leading Lady," "Everybody's Somebody Sometime").

Self-respect through sacrifice: A tranny must sacrifice something important to her to maintain her dignity and self-respect.

Self-acceptance: A tranny comes to terms with her desire to become a woman ("A Reconciliation," "At Risk," "Film at Eleven," "Leading Lady," "Thongs of Innocence, Thongs of Experience").

Self-discovery: A tranny discovers the truth about herself ("he" wants to be a she). (In a variation on this storyline, a "straight" male, discovering his attraction to trannies, learns that he is gay.)

Seduction: A tranny seduces a "straight" man.

Shemale dominance: A tranny teaches sexist men the errors of their ways.

Social tolerance: Social tolerance for transvestites and transsexuals is advocated "Boy Meets Girl," "My Brother, My Sister," "Prom Night." "Pygmalion," "Sanctuary")

Subterfuge: A man pretends to be a woman to infiltrate a men-only organization, to conduct research, or to gain some other benefit.

Substitution: As a favor or to protect her, a man pretends to be his sister, his girlfriend, or some other woman.

Surprise: A tranny surprises a man who'd assumed she was a genetic girl ("At Risk," "Boy Meets Girl," "Samantha")

Taking advantage: A tranny uses her unusual assets to personal advantage. (This storyline is similar to that of the subterfuge, except that, in this one, the tranny is not merely pretending, for a moment's gain, to be a woman but actually lives as a transvestite or a transsexual.)

Training: A woman, a man, or another tranny trains a shemale how to dress and behave as a woman does.

Transition: A tranny's metamorphosis from male to shemale is chronicled.
