Title: Claim Day

Chapter 46: On the Way Out

I ran across the rooftop, my lungs burning, the night air sharp in my throat. Nia stumbled beside me, blood soaking through her pants where the shotgun pellets had torn into her calf. Imani and Helena supported her on either side, their faces grim with determination.

“Keep moving,” I urged, scanning the vast expanse of the roof. The emergency staircase was just ahead, a dark metal structure against the moonlit sky. Behind us, I could hear footsteps. Smith’s girls couldn’t be that far behind.

Elaine was lagging, her pace slowing as we approached the stairs. I recognized that hesitation, the internal war between Edward’s command to escape and her overwhelming need to return to him. Her eyes kept darting back toward the roof access door.

“Elaine, stay with us,” I called, but she wasn’t listening. As we reached the staircase, she suddenly turned and sprinted back toward the building.

“Elaine, stop!” I shouted, but she was already halfway across the roof.

The roof access door burst open, and Lenore Renton emerged, shotgun raised. My stomach twisted—Elaine’s own fiancée, now hunting us, and her, down. The two women collided in a blur of movement. Elaine ducked under the shotgun barrel and slammed into Lenore’s midsection.

“Go!” I ordered my women, pushing them toward the stairs. “Start down, now!”

Imani grabbed my arm. “Gabriel, please, come with us.” Alva was already helping Nia down the first few steps, her face pleading with me to follow.

On the roof, Elaine and Lenore grappled for the shotgun. I watched, horrified, as they fought with a vicious intensity I’d never seen in either woman. These were scientists, colleagues, lovers, now trying to destroy each other. Elaine managed to wrench the shotgun away, sending it skittering across the roof. Without hesitation, she drove her fist into Lenore’s face, following with a series of brutal strikes that left blood streaming from Lenore’s nose.

Lenore fought back with equal ferocity, landing a solid blow to Elaine’s ribs that made her double over. But Elaine recovered quickly, sweeping Lenore’s legs and dropping her to the concrete. Before Lenore could rise, Elaine delivered a devastating punch that left her fiancée unconscious on the roof.

“Sweet dreams, honey,” Elaine said, her voice cold. She retrieved the shotgun and turned back toward the access door, clearly intending to go after Edward.

I ran to her, grabbing her arm. “Elaine, no. You have to come with us.”

“Let go,” she snarled, trying to pull away. “Edward needs me.”

“This isn’t what Edward wants,” I insisted, maintaining my grip. “He told you to get out. You got lucky once, you won’t get lucky again. We don’t know how many women Smith has claimed. He might already be claiming Duncan’s girls by now. You’re not helping Edward by getting yourself killed. He’d want you to help us!”

Something in my words penetrated her single-minded focus. Her shoulders slumped slightly, the conflict visible on her face. After a long moment, she nodded.

“Fuck!” she spat, turning away from the access door. “Fine. Let’s go.”

We descended the emergency stairs as quickly as we could manage with Nia injured. The metal steps clanged beneath our feet, each sound making me wince. By the time we reached the ground, my shirt was damp with sweat despite the cool night air.

The forest loomed ahead of us, a wall of darkness beyond the manicured grounds of Echelon. I hesitated, unsure which direction to take. The moonlight cast everything in silver and shadow, making the familiar landscape suddenly alien.

“Hey!” A voice called from the tree line—Warda. “This way!”

I couldn’t see her, but I trusted the voice. “Come on,” I said to the others, supporting Nia as we moved across the open ground toward the forest. Each step felt exposed, vulnerable. I kept expecting to hear shouts behind us, gunshots, but there was only the sound of our breathing and Nia’s occasional whimper of pain.

We reached the trees, plunging into their protective darkness, following Warda’s voice deeper into the forest and away from everything we’d built.
