<em>Many thanks to Andi and Helen for their much needed assistance and advice. You made this a much better story.</em>

<strong>Life on the lake</strong> ... I'm sorry, Donald, but I have a date

The divorce was final. She got the house in town, her car and she kept the vast majority of her money. I got the lake house, my car, our 25' pontoon boat and a shit pot full of money. Why did I get money? Because she has more than a whole lot and I figured I earned it.

Her family had "old" money. Money that went back a hundred years when Birmingham, Alabama, was a Major producer of steel and Angie's (That's my ex. Angela Cruz nee Smith.) great grandfather opened a small mill and produced cheap steel. By the time her father took over the business, they counted their money like they did their steel: by the ton.

Angie and I met at a bar. That particular bar had Trivia Nite every Tuesday. The contest was highly competitive and teams fought hard to win. My first night there I wasn't in the contest, but I mentally answered what I thought were the majority of the questions. I went back the next week specifically to enter the contest. I decided to be my own team so I took a score card and was on my own. I heard a few wisecracks about the size of my team, but I ignored them. When the scores were tallied at the end of the evening, I placed third out of fifteen teams. The next week, I was pounced upon by several teams who had members missing and wanted me to replace them for the evening. I chose a team because the guy who asked me to join them for the evening and I recognized knew each other from a bar we both had frequented.

The teams consisted of five players. He introduced me to the other three members of his team. One of them was Angie Smith. She was attractive, but not spectacular, and she remembered me from the previous week. "Are you good in all categories or are you a "one category pony?" I laughed as I remembered my score from the previous week. The contest that week hadn't been a "one category" contest and I told her so. We won that night and I answered more than my share of questions correctly. In fact, I was better than anyone else on the team.

When the evening was over, I was asked if I would be coming back the following week. I told them yes and was asked to sit with them in the event a regular team member couldn't be there.

The next week all of their players were there, but I was pounced upon by another team. My team won that night as well.

After the contest was over, I was leaving and Angie stopped me. "You aren't a "one category pony" after all, are you?"

I smiled. "No ma'am, I'm not." After that night, I became a semi-permanent member of her team.

Each team had a name and hers was "Frog and Switch." I learned that when trains tried to cross another railroad track, they needed something called a turnout to keep them from derailing. These turnouts consisted of different parts. One of those parts was a "frog" another was "switch rails", hence the name Frog and Switch.

I asked who the railroader on the team was, but they said there wasn't one. They just liked the name.

I played with Frog and Switch for several weeks and became friends with all of them. I knew very little about any of their personal lives. They were not interested in giving out much information about themselves. I only knew they all drove really nice cars. That in and of itself should have given me a hint, but for some reason, it didn't register. Oh, I figured they had money, I just didn't know the combined wealth of their families could buy most any country in the world. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but they were loaded.

Angie and I started sitting together early on, whether by design or accident, I wasn't sure, but there we were. We had spent every Tuesday evening for weeks playing Trivia and the loosely defined Trivia Contest season, whatever it was, was coming to a close. Frog and Switch won overall for the season and our prize was a trophy for each team member.

It was the last night and we had received our trophies. All of our team was gone except Angie and I. We were sipping on our drinks and just chatting and patting ourselves on our backs for winning.

Out of the blue I asked her if she would like to go out sometime.

"Sometime like the far distant future? Or sometimes like soon?" she asked.

"Soon," I answered. "Like Friday. I was thinking of dinner."

"I would like that," she said. "What time and where are we going so I'll know what to wear?"

I told her the time would depend on the where and I would call her. We exchanged numbers and went our separate ways for the evening.

I'm the manager of a fast food restaurant and at work the next morning, I made sure I had a full shift of employees and they started working. After things were up and running, I started thinking about where to take Angie for dinner. I settled on three options. One was Italian and two were just plain American comfort food. I opted for one of those, called for reservations then called Angie.

My only transportation was my five year old two door sedan, which, when I pulled into her driveway felt obscenely inadequate given the other cars sitting there. Her house was built like a European Chateau. I would not have been surprised had there been a moat around it and a dungeon in the basement.

She came out and hopped in almost before I came to a stop and she acted like she rode in cars like mine all the time.

We talked a lot during dinner and it was the first time in all of our weeks together that she asked me what I did for a living. I saw a slight flinch when I told her and figured this would be our first, last, and only date.

Dinner was great. She was exciting and fun to be with. When I took her home I received a peck on the cheek after I walked her to her door.

She called the next day to thank me for the nice evening and surprised me by asking if I was available that evening to go to a party with her. I accepted without hesitation, but afterward wondered why, if she knew there was a party, she didn't already have a date or, at the very least, ask me the night before. The host was one of our Frog and Switch team members. His first comment when we went in was directed to Angie. "Hey, Angie. How's Tommy?"

"He's not feeling too well tonight."

"That's too bad. Hope he feels better tomorrow. The lake is always more fun when he's there. Then to me. "Good to see you, again, Donald."

Angie led me to the bar where we ordered our drinks. I spent the rest of the evening hearing from everybody about how bad it was that Tommy couldn't make it. I usually have fun at parties, but that party was the exception. I stayed with Angie until she and two of her girlfriends decided they needed to go "freshen up". I went outside and stayed for a while before going back in and finding Angie in conversation with several other party goers. I listened for a few minutes then found something else to do. I was pretty much alone the rest of the evening occasionally finding Angie and refreshing her drink or getting her something to snack on.

When the party started breaking up, I found her and asked if she was ready to leave. "Where have you been," she said. "I've missed you."

On the way home, she commented on how nice the party had been and hoped I had fun. I sort of grunted. At her house, I, again, walked her to her door. When she tried to kiss my cheek, I stepped back, said goodnight and went home.

It was early morning the next day and my phone rang. It was Angie. "Hello," I said.

"Good morning. Did I wake you?"

"No. I was having breakfast. What can I do for you?"

"I know it's a little late to ask and I should have last night, but would you like to go to the lake with my friends and me today? It's always fun."

"What's wrong? Isn't Tommy feeling up to it?"?"

"No, he isn't..."

She didn't finish because I interrupted her. "No thank you. I'd prefer not being Tommy's stand-in again."

"Donald, Tommy's..."

I ended the call. She called again almost immediately and left a message which I listened to and felt like a fool.

"In case you're interested, Tommy is my dog. Good bye."

Fuck me to tears. I called her within seconds. "Hello, Donald," she answered.

"I am so embarrassed. If the invitation is still open, I'd love to go with you."

She chuckled. "Can you pick me up in two hours?"

"Of course."

I had been to the lake before, but never to anyone's house or their pontoon boat. I learned that Tommy was full of energy and loved being in the water and playing with people. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and vowed to someday buy a boat and spend more time there. Of course it wasn't only the lake that made the day wonderful; Angie had a lot to do with it.

All of the girls wore bikinis and we guys had no idea where to look first. Most of the bikinis were barely able to contain the tits they were supposed to. Angie's was no exception. More flesh was coming out of the bra than was staying in it, and every time she moved, her tits jiggled and my dick throbbed.

That day started our romance.

I met her parents the evening of our fifth date and they seemed to have no objection to their daughter dating the manager of a fast food restaurant.

I learned that Angie had an office in her father's building and was on his payroll as an executive assistant, but she admitted that she did nothing at all. She did go to her office a couple of times a week. On those days she had lunch at our little fast food place.

We were just ending our fifth or sixth date. We had been kissing pretty regularly but nothing else and I hadn't even attempted to go further. We were sitting in my car and she asked me if I would like to have dinner at her house the following Thursday. I readily accepted. After that we kissed good night and I called my boss.

"Wow," he said. "It looks like you are on your way. To be invited to dine with them is a huge feather in your cap. I recommend you find out what the dress for the evening is. It might be formal. Don't try to impress anyone. Just be yourself and act as naturally as you can and don't pick your nose where anyone can see you." He laughed as he said the nose picking line.

I called her the next day and asked about dress. "Black tie," she said. "There will be about a dozen people there." I had to rent a tux, shirt, tie and shoes for the evening.

The evening was very pleasant and I felt like I comported myself with a certain dignity. As I left for the evening, Angie gave me a kiss that promised a lot more and I was walking on air as I made my way to my car.

It was another two weeks before we had sex.

We were in the small apartment I called home. We had been making out and she excused herself. When she returned, she was naked. When I saw that, the race was on. I was naked in nothing flat and we were on my bed. Foreplay that night was nonexistent as we went right straight to dick in pussy, in and out fucking which lasted almost all night.

Six months later I proposed and she accepted. When we told her parents, they had no objection and so we started planning the wedding. One day she asked me to meet her at her office. When I arrived, her father was there and he introduced me to their attorney who handed me a folder with several pages of paper in it.

"We need you to sign this," he said.

"What is it?' I asked.

"A pre-nup."

I looked at Angie. "Is this your idea?"

"It's our idea." She said indicating the three of them.

"Give me the bottom line." I said to the attorney.

"Basically it says that in the event of a divorce for any reason, you both leave the marriage with exactly what you brought into it."

I looked at her again. "Do you plan on getting a divorce?"

"No."

"Neither do I, so we don't need a pre-nup."

The attorney spoke. "Without it there is no marriage."

I looked at her for the third time. "Is that right?"

"Yes."

"Good bye." I walked out.

My phone was ringing before I got to the elevator. I answered.

"Be reasonable," she said. "You don't have much and if we divorced I could lose a fortune."

"That's right. You could. If we divorced. I wasn't going to marry you for your fortune. I'm in love with you and was marrying you for you, and since I have nothing as you have just pointed out, I thought you were marrying me for me. Apparently I was wrong. Goodbye, Angie."

She tried calling again, but I never answered.

The next call was from her father and attorney. It was my first conference call. "My daughter is upset, Donald so we have to fix this." Said her father.

"There's nothing to fix. I'm not signing."

The attorney piped up. "Be reasonable Donald."

"Reasonable, my ass." I said. "If I were the cause of the divorce, I would expect to lose half of whatever I had regardless of how little it is compared to her. But according to your pre-nup, if she is the cause, I walk with nothing and she has caused a divorce and gotten away clean. There should be some penalty involved."

"But you have nothing to lose," said the attorney.

"Right now I don't have much compared to her, but I have some savings and investments and I fully expect to have more."

"But you will never reach her level," he said.

"You're right, so let's both cut our loses. Goodbye."

The next two weeks were quiet. Angie and I never talked nor did she come in the restaurant. Then one day I was in my office working. There was a one-way glass so I could see into the work area and part of the dining area, but nobody could see me or into my office. I looked up. Angie was ordering and looking around. I watched as she got her order, sat, and took her time eating.

Finished, she threw her trash in a container and left.

Another week went by and I figured why waste energy thinking about the past, even the recent past, so Angie was fading into the recesses of my memory. That same day my evening manager came in my office.

"Your girlfriend is back," he said.

"What do you mean?"

"Your girlfriend is waiting for you by your car."

Sure enough sitting in her car beside mine was Angie. She got out as I approached and stood waiting for me. We were almost touching when she spoke.

"Marry me," she said. "No pre-nup. We fly to St Thomas and get married. Today if you want." I started to shake my head. "You still love me. I know you do," she said.

We didn't fly to St, Thomas, but we did marry. We waited three days after getting the marriage license and were married in the courthouse. Her parents were not too happy about it and threatened to cut her off, but her grandfather had left her with more than a dozen people could spend. Okay, that might be another exaggeration, but she had plenty and her parents never did cut her off.

As a matter of fact, her parents grew to like me and vice versa. Her father was a hard working man who only wanted the best for his daughter. Her mother wanted the same.

The first four years were great. I was one spoiled brat, but I continued working in the restaurant. We had a house near her parents and a house on the lake. I loved the lake house and we spent a lot of time there. We bought a 25' pontoon boat and cruised the lake like we owned it.

Things started going downhill in our fifth year. She started spending less time with me and more time traveling. I tried to spend less time at the lake and more time in the city with her. She, on the other hand, would spend a week in Rome, then a week in London, and on and on.

Her father and I had become close. He had almost convinced me to come to work for him as one of his managers at a huge salary. I was in his outer office one day. His secretary was down the hall and he was on the phone in his office talking, I assumed, to his wife. "If she's with that lowlife Kenton again, I'm going to disown her. Donald has done nothing to deserve this. Where is she, or should I say where are they, staying?"

There was a pause. "The Kingston. Got it. What's their room number? Okay. I'm going to call her and find out what the hell she thinks she's doing."

I left his office complex and went down the hall before returning like I had just gotten there. He welcomed me like a son. In his office we chatted. I looked on his desk and saw Kingston, Rm 1476. He repeated his offer of a job. I told him to give me another few days to think about it.

In my car I thought about what I'd heard. I knew Richard Kenton and I knew that he and Angie had dated years ago. I also knew he had a girlfriend. Her name was Gloria Fredericks, and her family, while wealthy, were not near the level of Angie's family.

Gloria and Kenton had been to several parties that Angie and I also attended. She and I were friends, so I called her.

"Hi, Donald. What's up?"

"I was wondering where Richard was. I need to chat with him."

"He's on a business trip."

"Where?" I asked.

"Miami. He'll be home Friday night. Anything I can do?"

"Yes, there is. Could you meet me for drinks?"

"Of course. Where and When?"

An hour later we were in a bar popular with our group of friends.

"What's up?" she asked as soon as our drinks were served and the server left.

"I overheard a conversation today that worries me a bit."

"Okay. What was it?" I told her everything except where I heard it. I also didn't give her the room number. "I don't believe it, Donald. Richard and I are getting married in three months."

"I understand, but Angie and I have been married for almost five years and I'd like to know if she is cheating." We paused, both of us deep in thought. "Do you know Richard's room number?"

"She took a piece of paper out of her purse. It's 1476."

I took a piece of paper out of my pocket and showed it to her. On it I had written 1476. "Angie is in Miami, shopping. She's at the Kingston Hotel. This is her room number." I slid the paper to her. She started crying.

"What are we going to do?" she asked.

"To tell you the truth, I was going to go to Miami and see if I could catch them."

She took a big gulp of her drink, looked at me and said, "When do we leave?"

We flew to Miami the next afternoon, took a room in the Kingston and waited. We paced, had room service, and talked. We didn't want to take a chance of being seen so we stayed in the room.

At 11 that night we went to room 1476 and knocked. "Who's there?" Came Kenton's voice.

"Hotel security, sir. Please open the door."

He did with a towel wrapped around his waist. Angie was in the only bed in the room with a sheet pulled up to her chin. I started snapping pictures and rushed over to the bed, pulled the sheet out of her hand which exposed her breasts and snapped off two more photos. I looked and Gloria was pounding on Richard and his towel had fallen so I took more photos.

I grabbed Gloria's arm and we left. She wanted to stay and pound on Richard some more, but I pulled her away. I had not said anything to Angie, and she said nothing to me.

Back in our room, I couldn't get Gloria to stop crying. I tried, but couldn't. Both of our phones rang almost at the exact same time. We ignored them. There were two Queen sized beds in the room so we each took one. Neither of us slept.

We flew home the next morning and I went right to Angie's father's office.

"So, Donald. Did you decide?" He was talking about the job offer, but I wasn't when I said, "Yes, sir, I have. I've decided on a divorce."

"What are you talking about?" he asked.

I showed him the pictures I took the night before.

"Goddamnit," he said. "I knew this would happen." He paused. "Son, why don't you think about this. You have it pretty well made the way things are. So she sews a few wild oats, what's the harm?"

"The harm is, she's my wife and I can't tolerate cheating. I'm going to get an attorney and have her served within the week. I'm sorry, sir, but I don't have a choice."

<hr pg="2" />"I wish you would think about it first."

"I have, sir."

"I wish I had something wise to say, but I don't. But you can bet your ass, I'll have some things to say to my daughter."

I went home and started packing my stuff. My car was loaded when she pulled in the drive.

"You're moving out?" she asked.

"Yep."

"Can we talk about it?"

"What's there to talk about? You went to Miami with Richard Kenton and fucked him. There's not much room there for discussion."

"I can apologize and promise it will never happen again."

"You could, but I won't believe you because he's not the first. You've fucked men all over Europe on your trips." That was a shot in the dark, but she didn't refute it.

"What are you going to do?"

"What do you think I'm going to do? Find an attorney and get a divorce and I'm doing it just as quickly as I can. Until then, I'm moving to the lake house. I'll be back tomorrow for the rest of my stuff." She started crying. "The only thing I want to know is why? What did I do wrong? Can you tell me? Please?"

She shook her head and ran to the bedroom.

I was back the next day and finished taking my stuff out. She, likewise, came to the lake house and took the stuff she wanted to the town house. We spoke only to answer questions about what went with which house.

It took two days to find an attorney I liked. He looked at the photos and spoke only two words. "Slam dunk."

We had one meeting. Her attorney agreed with mine and we started dividing. She took the town house and I got the lake house. She got her car and I got mine. Mine was an almost new, green Mercedes-Benz 550. She brought her financials regarding the money her grandfather left her in addition to her trust, which was huge, but I couldn't touch it and I really didn't want to. It was not my intention to steal from her, but I thought I deserved something, so we settled on a figure that would be enough for me to retire and live comfortably if I chose to, considering the lake house, my car and our almost new pontoon party barge were all paid for.

I still couldn't get her to tell me what I had done to cause her to cheat.

I had taken two weeks off to decompress and think about things. I spent my first day sitting in my boathouse watching people on the lake enjoying themselves. Angie and I had a few casual friendships on the lake, but had never fully developed them.

I also had a 23' Centurion that came with the house. I liked that boat and used it much more often than the pontoon boat. It didn't take long for me to get comfortable handling both of them, and I had all kinds of fun running all over the lake.

I was cruising the lake one day in the Centurion, and decided to go up a little slew off the lake. Slews are generally shallow, sometimes full of reeds, usually muddy. At any rate, exploring new slews came with a high degree of caution. That slew, however was deep and clear and I came upon a boat house with a sign. "Lakeside Harry's Stop by for a drink and some conversation." I pulled in, secured the boat and walked up to the bar. It was a boathouse and half of it had been converted into a bar of sorts with a real bar, stools, tables and chairs. It even had an ancient juke box which didn't work. A grizzled older man stood there and asked me what I'd have.

"How about a screwdriver," I said. He mixed one and set in on the bar. "How much?" I asked.

"Nothing if you come by boat or swim."

"Those are the only ways to get here as far as I can tell," I told him.

"By golly, you're right." He said with a big grin.

That was the first of many drinks I had at that bar and Harry was the first of many characters I met there.

My association with "Lake People" grew and I learned they were different from anybody else. Their entire lives were lived there. There was even a landing where you could dock your boat, go ashore and shop for food, tools, gasoline cans; anything for the upkeep of house and boat.

I also learned that lake people come from all walks of life. Retired judges, pilots, architects, clergy and TV personalities. A very few, like me, left the lake every day to go to work.

The majority of fulltime lake people made their way to Lakeside Harry's sometime during the week with Tuesday's being the most popular. Harry never took any money for anything served at his bar. "I don't have a liquor license so I can't charge," he'd say when asked. Consequently, we would all bring bottles of liquor and cases of beer or whatever our drink of preference was. There were always snacks, lemonade, iced tea and other things available for the peckish or thirsty. He always had more than he could give away. He even gave to the tourist boaters who chanced upon his sign and stopped. He would never give alcohol to people who had children in their boats, however. They always received something non-alcoholic.

On weekends the lake was packed with tourists while the lake people stayed home and watched ... except for Friday and Saturday evenings: That's when they had their parties. Getting to those parties was done by boat. It was not unusual to see a dozen boats tied up at someone's dock on those evenings.

With the onset of cold weather, the only thing that changed was that the tourists disappeared. Lakeside Harry's was still open only it was moved inside his boathouse. Same with the parties.

It took about eight months for me to be recognized as a bona fide lake person and I really felt part of something for the first time in forever and I was "livin' large". Of course going to work every day slowed me down a little.

I was still at the restaurant because I enjoyed going to work everyday. I wasn't ready for retirement. The money I made on my job paid my monthly expenses and gave me a few spending dollars. The money I received from Angie was in the stock market.

I had moved away from the friends Angie and I had and gravitated to the lake people even though most of them were older than me: Some by many years.

It was a rare weekend when I wasn't invited to a party. I had even thrown a few myself. When I did, I had to pull a few dollars from my market account because it wasn't cheap to throw a party there.

It didn't take long for everybody on the lake to know I was divorced and worked in a fast food restaurant. There were lots of jokes about how many hamburgers we had to sell to afford my house. There were even more jokes when they learned I got it in my divorce settlement.

I developed a close friendship with a retired judge and his wife, George and Judy Pasternak. They lived about a mile up the lake from me and had a gorgeous house, but they thought mine was as well, and they were right. When we bought it, Angie spared no expense in decorating it.

It was traditional when attending a party to bring something. The next party I attended was at the Pasternak's. I secured the Centurion, grabbed the wine I brought, headed inside and was met by Judy who hugged me and gave me a peck on the cheek: Another lake tradition. There were already fifteen or twenty people in attendance and I knew most of them.

Judy took me around and introduced me to the people she knew I didn't know because they were out-of-town house guests of the Pasternak's. There were three of them. George's brother Harold, his wife Rosa, and their daughter, Christina. Christina was about my age so we gravitated toward each other.

As usual, it was a great party. Christina and I got along so well that I invited her to my place the next day for lunch. I took my Centurion to pick her up. That was at noon. After lunch, we spent time just lazing around the house before playing pool in the boat house. It was a game neither of us could play well, but we had a lot of fun. I finally got her home after midnight

We spent the better part of the next day, which was Sunday, together as well, but I had to get her to the Pasternak's before three because she and her parents had to get home. They lived in Montgomery which was about a two hour drive.

Christina and I talked several times during the following week and she invited me to have dinner with her and her family that Friday. I took off from work a little early in order to drive to Montgomery and not be late. Dinner was nice and the time with her and her family was even nicer.

She drove up the following weekend and stayed with the Pasternak's, but spent all but her sleeping hours with me. The next week it was my turn to go to Montgomery, but since I had no one to stay with, I was in a hotel.

We went on like that for several weeks and were pretty much considered an item around the lake.

I received a call from Angie's father one day. He wanted to see me so I met him in his office. We talked about his company and me. "I need a manager, Donald. A guy, or gal, who can maintain a personnel roster and production schedule and who knows how to keep people busy and productive. If you can do that with mostly young people in a fast food restaurant, you can certainly manage it with motivated adults.

"I've talked to Jimmy McMasters, and he tells me you're top notch as a manager." Jimmy McMasters owned the restaurant I worked in and was my boss. "I know we've talked around about you working for me and I think I had you hooked until my daughter screwed up, but now I want to get serious." He made me a very attractive offer and I was tempted, but still I hesitated. "Why aren't you jumping on this with both feet?" he asked. "You can't beat the money and benefits package. Hell, it's ten times better than what you have now."

"Yes, it is, but I can't get past the elephant in the room."

"Listen, I'm a businessman. I run a big company and make a lot of money for a lot of people. My daughter has nothing to do with this company anymore. I had her on the payroll and gave her an office just to give her something to do. She hasn't been here much in the last three years as you know." When we were married, she would go in a couple of times a week just for something to do. Towards the end when she was traveling, she never bothered.

"I'll tell you this. If you do come to work for me, I'll hold your feet to the fire and won't cut you any slack. And as far as anyone saying anything about you being my ex-son-in-law I want to hear about it. Got it?"

"Yes, sir. Give me a few days to think about it."

"Okay, but I need someone now."

Once out of his office, I called my boss and told him about the offer I just had. "You'd be a fool to turn it down," he said. "You'll never get that kind of money from me or any other restaurant in town."

"Okay," I said. "This is my two week notice."

He laughed. "You don't need that. Go clean out your office if there's anything there you want and good luck."

I immediately called and told Angie's father I was all his effective immediately. He seemed to be a happy camper.

I started work the next day. There was a small group of people who scheduled production output, machine maintenance down time, shipping schedules and various other things, and they all worked for me. I had been there less than a week and I started hearing the rumors. One rumor said I took that job away from somebody who deserved it. Another said I got it because I was being paid off for quietly divorcing the owners' daughter because she was pregnant with another man's child. I laughed my ass off and called my people together.

"Okay. Let's clear the air. I was, in fact, married to Angie Smith. We were married for almost five years. As in all marriages we had good times and not-so-good times and our marriage, like so many others, reached a breaking point, so we broke. That's all there is to it. Anything else you might hear is bullshit. Any questions?" There were none. "Now, as far as how I got this job, I earned it, just like all of you earned your jobs. The company had a need and you filled that need. You would not have been hired if you weren't qualified. Likewise, I would not have been hired had I not been qualified. You will all have the opportunity to watch me in action and you are free to confront me any time you don't think I'm doing my job. Now do we have any questions?" Again, there were none. "Let's go back to work."

I walked out into the hall and Angie's father was standing there. "Let's take a walk," he said. "I came down to see how you were doing." He looked at me. "Thank you for what you said in there. I've heard the rumors and some of them are pretty vicious. You went as far as you could to stop those rumors. You could very easily have told the truth.

"I did tell the truth. We did reach a breaking point and we did break."

He put his hand on my shoulder. "My daughter really fucked up, Donald, and I'm sorry."

"You can't live her life for her, Mr. Smith."

"Donald, do me a favor. You called me Ralph when you were married to Angie, and I'd like you to do it again." He laughed. "That should start more rumors because nobody else in this company except the board members call me that."

It didn't take long to prove that I could do my job. Of course my lake time suffered, and time with Christina did as well. I was working long hours learning my job and how to do it correctly, but come payday, it was worth it.

I had worked a lot of hours and needed a break so I called and asked Christina to dinner on Saturday.

"I'm sorry, Donald, but I have a date."

"A date? I thought you and I were..." I didn't finish what I was thinking, but said something else instead. "Of course. Good luck and have fun."

Several days later, I was cruising past the Pasternak's. Christina and I hadn't talked since her date. George saw me and waved me in. They, like most of us on the lake, had a refrigerator in their boathouse so he and I sat and had a beer. Then we had a second one. We were almost finished when we were joined by his wife and Christina. Christina had come up for the weekend.

The four of us sat and talked through another beer before I told them I needed to leave while I could still control my boat. I stood to leave, hugged Judy, shook George's hand, nodded to Christina, untied my boat and stepped into it. Christina stood there as I turned the key to start the motor. "I'll be here until Sunday evening if you want to do anything," she said.

I half-waved and left.

By mid-morning the next day, I had four boats tied up at my boathouse and we were all sitting on the dock chatting when the Pasternak's coasted in and tied up. Christina was with them. I stood to get them drinks, but George motioned me to stay where I was and got them himself. Christina got more chairs from the boathouse and placed them around. By noon, hamburgers and hotdogs were on the grill and the ladies were in the boathouse kitchen fixing beans and potato salad.

The day turned out to be a great one. As it drew to a close, the boathouse had somehow gotten clean, the trash was gone, and the dishes in the dishwasher. The Pasternak's and Christina were the last ones to leave. They stepped in their boat and I untied them. Christina looked like she wanted to say something, but didn't. That was okay with me.

The next day I was back sitting on my dock watching the boats go by. Some went as fast as they could, while others, like most of the boats on the lake, sauntered by, if a boat can be described as sauntering. At any rate they went by at a much more leisurely pace. Just before noon, Christina pulled in driving one of Pasternak's little inboards. He had three of them. The one she had was the smallest and slowest. I took the line she tossed and tied her up both fore and aft. She stepped out onto the dock.

"Like something to drink?" I asked.

"Is there anything left after yesterday?" she chuckled.

"I think you might be able to find something." I said as I indicated she should help herself. I had restocked before going to bed the previous night.

She got herself a coke. "You throw a pretty good party," she said. "Everybody seemed to have fun."

"It's always fun when there's free food and drinks." It was my turn to chuckle. "Actually when you have people together like those yesterday, you can't help but have fun." She was standing so I indicated she should sit.

We sat and watched the people on the lake as she drank her coke. It was almost gone before she spoke. "What are you doing tonight?"

"Hanging around here and watching TV unless someone stops by."

"Would you like some company?"

"Depends on who stops by. I prefer some over others."

"I was thinking about me."

I looked at her. "Don't you have another date?"

She looked at me and frowned. "Donald, it was dinner with an old friend. It meant nothing."

"Nothing to you, but I was under the impression we were exclusive."

"And I thought we were just dating."

"I guess you and I define things differently."

"I guess we do." We sat in silence while she finished her coke. When she was finished, she stood, walked to the trash can and tossed the empty can. "I suppose that means you would prefer somebody else's company."

"I didn't say that. I like your company. I just think we need to define the rules. For example, are we casual daters? Do we just see each other when you come to the lake? Do you date other guys when you are in Montgomery? Do you call me when you can't find another date? Do I call you when I don't have another date? What are the perimeters?"

She plopped back in her chair. "The perimeters are I like you. A lot. I made a mistake going to dinner with him. It's a mistake I won't make again. I'd like for us to be exclusive and see where it goes. Will that work for you?"

I smiled. "That would be perfect." We both stood and hugged.

It was a nice afternoon.

Christmas was coming and most of the lake houses were fully decorated. Mine was not. The first Saturday in December, seven boats pulled up to my dock and about 20 people came ashore carrying boxes of stuff. I saw them from the house and went out to greet them but they basically ignored me and went about the business of decorating both my house and boat house. They even put strings of lights on my pontoon boat. Around lunch time, food started appearing. The decorating party lasted until late into the night. It was one of the best parties of the year and my house looked great afterwards.

Christina and I traded weekends. She would come up and stay with the Pasternak's one weekend and I would go to Montgomery the next. Still no sex.

I came home from a trip to town to find a car I didn't recognize in the driveway. It was a new Mercedes. Inside the house, Angie was sitting in my favorite chair looking out over the lake. I had never given any thought to changing the locks.

She was sipping on a cup of coffee.

I stood in front of her. "You're trespassing."

"Yes, I am."

"Why?"

"I wanted to talk." She looked straight ahead never lifting her head to look at me.

"Good. Go find somebody who wants to listen."

She didn't move. "Please?" She finally raised her head and looked at me.

I sat in the chair next to hers, or rather, mine, but it was the one she was sitting in. "Okay. Talk."

She swiveled around to look at me. "I fucked up. I didn't plan to. It was on one of my last trips to Europe. The man who sat beside me on the plane was a Frenchman going home. He was a reporter working here and was going home for a vacation. He talked about how different our two countries were, but how much he enjoyed both. Usually I sleep on long flights, but I was more or less his captive audience and I enjoyed listening to him. When we landed, his sister met him at the airport and volunteered to take me to my hotel.

"He asked if he could show me Paris that evening and I said yes. We toured Paris for three days. I had mentioned to him that I had once seen a play once entitled 'Picasso at the Lapin Agile' and had heard that the Lapin Agile was an actual cabaret so I asked him to take me there and he did. You might remember I brought you a mug from there." I did remember. She made a big fuss about it as if it were the best gift in the world. All I saw was an ugly rabbit on a mug. After I received the house in the divorce, I was cleaning out what I didn't want and that mug was one of the things I tossed.

<hr pg="3" />"As the days went by, he made no effort to do so much as hold my hand. I considered him a friend but could also feel an emotional attachment building. The last time I saw him that trip, he kissed me and I kissed him back and I realized that our platonic relationship just went out the window, but I wouldn't let him go any farther. I cut short my trip and came home.

"The next month, I told you I was going to London with my friend Betsy, and I did. The day after we arrived, I left Betsy and flew to Paris to be with Henri. I hated what I was doing, but felt helpless to stop. I still felt that I could enjoy his company and not sleep with him. The first day nothing happened and I went to sleep thankful that it didn't.

"The next night was different. He spent the night with me. That was the only time, Donald, I swear it. I never went to Paris again. I saw him twice when he came back to Washington, but we didn't have sex. I hated myself and loved you and kept reminding myself when I was with him that I loved you and you alone. He never pushed me to sleep with him either time which made me want to sleep with him all the more... but we didn't.

"One afternoon, I met my friend Julia for lunch. She told me about her latest beau and I ended up telling her about Henri. A few days later she was at a party, got drunk and told Richard Kenton what I said. The next day he threatened to tell you if I didn't have sex with him. I couldn't stand the thought of you knowing, so I fucked him. I also fucked him in Miami. That's when you caught us. My parents knew about him because I told my mother after the first time. They almost disowned me.

"I am so sorry, Donald. I wish I could take it all back, but I can't."

"Are you still seeing Kenton?"

"God no. I hate him and haven't seen or talked to him since Miami."

We sat in silence for a long time. Finally, I asked her if she was hungry. We both went to the kitchen and fixed sandwiches, and opened a bag of chips. She took two beers out of the fridge. We sat and ate.

The Christmas lights came on automatically at dusk and she jumped when they came on. She wanted to see them so we went outside and admired them. We were standing outside admiring the lights when we heard a honk of a boat's horn. We turned and the Pasternak's flew by in one of their inboards.

"I also fucked up when I gave you this house," she grinned as we turned back to admire the lights. "I should have given you the town house."

"I would have sold it and bought one out here anyway," I told her.

"Do you ever miss me, Donald?"

"Honestly? Yes. I miss your smile, your smell, your personality and your body. I really miss your body." It was true. I did miss all of those things; especially the sex. I hadn't been laid since before the divorce.

She crossed to me, patted me on the arm and smiled. "I miss you too." She leaned toward me and her head went on my shoulder. "I'm sorry. Will you ever forgive me?"

"Angie, I loved you with a passion I never felt before or since. I would have been happy to live my whole life with you. In fact, that was my plan when we got married. I expected to die a very old man still in love with, and married to, you." I paused. "You asked me if I could forgive you. No, I can't, and the reason is simple. You destroyed our lives. My life. You were my life. My reason for living, and you literally fucked it away."

She moved in closer and wrapped her arms around my waist. "I did, and I will regret it for the rest of my life."

She took her hands from around me and we walked into the house. She reached for her jacket, put it on, walked back to me, kissed me lightly on the cheek and left. I thought as I watched her walk out that she had a seriously nice body.

The biggest and nicest house on the lake belonged to a former TV star and her husband. Their names were Kit and Andre Silver. The three of us bonded as soon as we met. I spent many evenings at their house and vice versa. I once asked Kit how many men she had kissed while making her movies. "At least ten. Some of them were nice and some I absolutely hated. You wouldn't believe the personal hygiene of some of those guys, and gals."

"How do you sit and watch your wife kissing those guys?" I asked Andre.

He laughed. "We were married before she started making the movies. The first time I watched her kiss another man, I cringed and I've never gotten over it, but it's part of the job and I've dealt with it. I love her and she loves me; and most importantly, we trust each other. That's the bottom line.

They were my second favorite couple on the lake and they were just a couple of years older than me. I guess that's the main reason we bonded so quickly. She had starred in several of the made for TV romantic comedy movies and had even starred in a couple of Hollywood movies. When people asked why she was no longer doing TV and Hollywood stuff, her answer was always the same. "I could either quit on top or stay until my tits dragged the floor. I preferred going out on top." They paid her very well when she made the movies, but the residuals were pure gravy, and very generous.

The lake Christmas party was at their house, and there were a shit pot full of people there. I asked Christina to come, but she said she had other plans. Most of the guests were lake people, with a smattering of others. There were even some TV types who stood out like sore thumbs. It was my first party where they actually had valet parking for the boats. We pulled up to the dock and someone docked our boats for us. I laughed my ass off when I saw that, but I let them do their thing.

The party ended and I was one of the last to leave. The boat valets had my boat ready as soon as I walked out of the house.

I really liked my life except for the fact that I hadn't been laid since before the divorce. I was hoping Christina would help me fix that problem and I had called and invited her to the Christmas party. She had been unable to make it and then she told me she was unable to see me the weekend after the party. I didn't need a rock to fall on my head so I stopped calling her.

Kit and Andre invited me to dinner one evening. It was to be just the three of us. I went in their house and was greeted as I normally was, but the lightness and levity I normally associated with them was missing. We had just started the main course when Andre put his knife and fork on his plate, took his napkin from his lap, wiped his mouth and looked at me. "Donald, I'm dying," he said. I looked at him then at Kit. She had tears in her eyes and was looking at her husband. I looked back at him. "I have a brain tumor and have been told that regardless of what they do, I won't live more than four or five months." I was speechless. "So Kit and I need your help. We need to get things ready, but most of all, we need you to help Kit. I will do what I can, but there will come a time when I go in the hospital that she will need all the support you can give her."

"Of course," I choked out. "Just tell me what, where and when and I'll be there."

"We know you will." He reached and covered her hand with his. "The first thing is, we don't want our other friends to know. You're the only one we're telling. We don't want them treating us differently or walking on eggshells around us."

"I completely understand."

We spent the rest of the evening going over what he wanted as his end of life preferences and what she might need of me.

I spent a lot of time with them over the next couple of months. Andre and I went through their house from top to bottom repairing even the smallest thing that was either defective or broken. He wanted everything to be as perfect as it could be so Kit wouldn't have anything to worry about, at least for a while after he was gone. Our friends, even the Pasternak's, started teasing us about the amount of time I was spending at their house. The teasing had some sexual undertones to it. We just laughed it off.

Kit and I took him to his medical appointments and made him as comfortable as we could. His family, of course, was told, and they spent some time with him. "It isn't that I don't love my family," he said one day, "but I don't want them sitting around here waiting for me to die. Make them go home."

Kit did. She convinced them that he needed quiet and rest, so they, reluctantly, went home.

It had been over four months since Christina and I had talked. Neither George nor Judy mentioned her when we saw each other.

Andre went into the hospital almost three months after he was diagnosed, and he died four days later. Kit and I used his favorite boat and spread his ashes over the lake. She was at peace.

She wanted me to spend even more time at the house helping her greet friends as they stopped by. She was strong and accepted the visits, condolences and huge amounts of food with grace and dignity. Both the local and national press reported his death because of Kit's popularity.

She was starting to have difficulty staying in her house, so I asked her to come to mine and spend some time and she did. There was never any move on either of our parts to make more of our friendship than it was. She had her room and I had mine. She just found it difficult to stay in her house.

After a couple of weeks, Kit moved back home. I had gotten used to her being in my house so her moving out was difficult for me. Her smell was all over the place as was the small changes she made to the décor.

At my office, things were going well. Ralph called me into his office one day and told me that Angie was engaged. That didn't surprise me. I couldn't imagine she would be single long. What did surprise me was he told me he was hiring her fiancé as one of the traffic managers and he would be working under me. "He is experienced and we can use him. Do you think that might cause a problem for you?" he asked.

"Not for me, but I don't know about him."

"Let's ask him," he said. He flipped a switch on his desk. "Marge, send Robert in, please." A big, tall football player looking man came in. "Robert, this is Donald. Donald, Robert. Donald is your new boss. I fully expect you to do your job and do it well. You will receive no special consideration from either Donald or me. Isn't that right, Donald?

"Absolutely, Ralph." Robert jerked his head and looked at me when I called the boss by his first name.

It was about that time that I received a call from Kenton's old girlfriend, Gloria. She was laughing hysterically, but I managed to understand that Kenton's house had burned to the ground with virtually everything he owned, including his car which was in the garage. it seemed that he had missed three monthly insurance premium payments so was uninsured. I wanted to ask her how she managed to cause him to miss the premium payments, but decided not to. Some things were better left unsaid.

The following Friday, I went to a party at the lake. The Pasternak's were there with Christina. It had been some time since we'd seen each other. We said hello without any particular warmth. I had gotten a plate of food and walked outside and stood holding my plate, eating, and looking at the water. The lake had truly become my home.

"You're a popular guy." I heard her say as she approached me.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"First I see you with your ex-wife, then the widow of your friend moves in with you."

"When did you see me with my ex?"

"Uncle George and I were coming down to see you one day and he saw you standing with her so we decided not to stop."

We just looked at each other before I decided to speak. "My ex-wife stopped by to talk. We had a sandwich and a beer and she finally told me how and why she cheated. We looked at the Christmas lights, she kissed me on the cheek and went home. As far as my widowed friend is concerned, she stayed here for two weeks because she couldn't stand being alone in her house. She had her room and I had mine. When I went to work during the day, she split her time between here and her house. At her house she tried to rid it of some of the memory of her dead husband. She got rid of his clothes, his razor, shaving cream, after shave and other personal effects. When she was here she rearranged the furniture several times just to have something to do to occupy herself."

I raked the remainder of the food on my plate into the lake and turned to go back inside. She stepped in front of me. "If you're running a hotel for lost or lonely women, I'd like to put my name on your waiting list."

"I chuckled. That would be a good way to stay celibate. Both ladies left with their virtue intact."

"Maybe they didn't try hard enough," she said.

"And how is your love life?" I asked.

"If what you say is true, it's about like yours."

"That's too bad. You don't deserve to be left alone. There were times when I could barely keep my hands off of you."

"Why did you?"

"I'm not sure anymore. I guess I just wanted to make sure."

"Make sure of what?"

"I've only truly and completely loved one person in my life and she cheated on me, so trust is a big issue. I was determined to never commit myself to another relationship without completely trusting that person. I was reaching that point with you."

"Then I blew it. Right?" I shrugged. "Then I blew it again when I saw you with your ex and your friend. I can't seem to get it right. Can I?"

"We all make mistakes."

She took my dirty plate. "I'll take this in for you." I left the party early and never saw her again that evening.

Two days after the party was Monday and I worked. Angie's fiancé, Robert seemed to be catching on rather quickly. Angie stopped by to have lunch with him. She and I acknowledged each other and Robert's eyes were on us the whole time.

For the second time since living at the lake, I went home to a strange car in the driveway. Christina was sitting behind the wheel and got out as I pulled into my garage. She opened her trunk, took out a suitcase and a carryon and approached me. She tilted her head up and kissed me long and slow.

We broke apart and she took her luggage and headed for the door. She stood waiting for me because I hadn't moved. I broke out of my trance, walked over and unlocked the door. She went in and headed straight for my bedroom. She'd been in my house many times and knew her way around. She put her suitcase on the bed and opened it before looking at me.

"Are any of those drawers empty?" She indicated the chest of drawers and the dresser.

"No," I said slowly.

"I need a place for my stuff. One drawer in each will be okay. I'll put the rest in the closet."

"Would you mind telling me what you are doing?" I asked.

"I'm moving in for awhile. I figure I'd move in and make you sleep with me. That way neither of us is celibate and we will either learn to trust each other or not. Your ex and your friend seemed to enjoy being here and I think I will too. The only difference is, you and I aren't going to live like brother and sister. We're going to live like lovers." She looked at me. "Unless you'd rather not."

I went to my dresser and emptied the three drawers on the right side leaving the three on the left for me. I dumped my stuff on the floor figuring I'd pick it up later. The chest of drawers was next. She got the bottom two drawers. Like the dresser, my shit landed on the floor. There were two huge closets. I was using one. She took the other.

I sat on the bed and watched as she unpacked and put her suitcase in her closet. She swiped her hands together two times like she was knocking dust off of them. "Well, that's finished. What do we do now?" She asked as she came toward me unbuttoning her shirt.

I stood and met her halfway. I moved her hands and replaced them with my own. I finished unbuttoning by feel because I was staring intently into her eyes while she did the same to mine. I pulled the blouse out of her jeans and unbuttoned the last one before slowly sliding it off her shoulders letting it join my stuff on the floor.

Her bra was black and lacy. "I like your bra," I said as I ran my hands around the edge where it touched her skin. She closed her eyes and inhaled as my hands moved over her skin.

"You know what they say about black underwear, don't you?" she asked.

"No, tell me."

"They say that when a woman wears it she wants to be fucked."

"Really? Is that true?"

She giggled. "It is in this case."

"Well, then, I guess it's good that I'm here."

"I think it's going to be very good that you're here."

She started unbuttoning my shirt. When the front buttons were undone, she pushed the top off my shoulders and down my arms and like her shirt, it drifted to the floor.

"I have you where I want you now, Mr. Donald Cruz." She started working on my belt then the button on my trousers and finally my zipper. She pushed my trousers down my legs. She stood and her body radiated heat as she pressed against mine. Her eyes were clouded with love and lust as she reached down to caress my dick.

"You are mine now, I need you inside me and when I have you, I will never let you go. Her eyes locked on mine as she moved to kiss me. Her lips were soft and I sucked on her tongue savoring a slight taste of cherries as I felt her breath get ragged and a moan escaped her mouth.

"I am not a slut, Donald, but I have wanted you since our third date.

She nipped my ear and ran her lips along my neck and collar bone causing me to shiver. With a smirk she kissed her way down my body until she was on her knees. She pulled my briefs down to the floor and pulled them away. Free from its' confines my cock throbbed with anticipation as she slowly sucked me into her mouth. She sucked slowly with gentle pressure at first, teasing the head with her tongue until she sucked harder to release me with a pop. Her tongue ran along the length of my shaft and she reached up to gently stroke my balls, feeling their weight. She kissed my sack and started to gently suck on my balls while she stroked my shaft. With a sense of purpose, she returned to sucking my cock and I groaned with pleasure as she pulled the entirety of my erection into her mouth. She moved her head back once again releasing my cock from her mouth and looked up at me. "It's mine now, Mr. Cruz. It's going to be inside me and once it's there you're mine forever and I'll never let you go."

She smiled and her eyes never left my face until I put my hand in her hair and gently pulled up. She got the hint and stood. She reached for her belt buckle as she rose and as soon as she was standing her jeans were ready to drop. They slid down her legs and she kicked them off. Her black lace panties were next. It was my turn to go to my knees. When I was there, I slid them down her legs and I could immediately feel the heat coming from her pussy. I leaned in and stuck my tongue out. She saw that and moved her body in close to me so my tongue could touch her. It was the first time I had tasted pussy in a very long time and her reaction gave me the impression that it was the first time her pussy was touched by a tongue or anything else in just as long.

Her hands went to the back of my head and pulled me in to her.

"God, Donald, I've wanted this for so long. Let me get on my back so I can feel it all." I stopped and she jumped on my bed and spread her legs. "Eat me, now, Donald. Eat me, please." I tongue fucked her and her hips started bouncing off the bed. Harder and higher she bounced until I felt her juices gush into my mouth. I swallowed as fast as I could to keep up with her. She finally slowed and stopped. "Oh, my God. That was incredible," she almost screamed as I moved up her body and she pulled as I moved.

She grabbed my dick as I lifted my hips. She aimed me at her pussy. "Take it, baby. It's your pussy so take it." She kept encouraging me as I eased into her. When I hit bottom she sighed and her shoulders started heaving. I extended my arms so I was in the front leaning rest position and looked at her. She was crying.

<hr pg="4" />Concerned, I asked her. "Are you okay?"

"I'm perfect. I'm sorry about that silly date, Donald. And I'm sorry I got jealous about your ex-wife and your friend. God, Donald, don't ever leave me, just fuck me. Now. Fuck me and don't stop until neither of us can fuck any more. It's your pussy, use it any way you want, just use it."

I started moving in and out and she was moving up and down. In and out. Up and down. That's what pussies and dicks were made for, plain and simple. They were made for fucking and that's what we did until late at night. When we were too tired to fuck anymore, we fixed breakfast and ate. Then we fucked some more.

The first party we went to together after she moved in was hosted by her Uncle and Aunt, the Pasternaks, and most of my lake friends were there. Kit was there and doing as well as could be expected. One of the TV Movie companies wanted her to come back so they offered her a three movie deal. She told me she was going to lease her lake house for the time she was gone, but would be back. She couldn't leave Andre or the lake and as long as she could see the lake and go boating on it, Andre would always be nearby.

My friends were happy to hear that I had a woman living in my house who I was actually sleeping with. I told them they weren't as happy as I was.

Christina and I hosted several parties of our own. The largest one was our engagement party and we've been told that it was the largest party ever given on the lake.

Two years after our wedding, Kit had hers. Her new hubby was also the producer of her last movie. They fell in love after meeting while she was filming the first one. He had no problems watching other actresses kiss their leading men, but once he met and fell in love with Kit, the two of them retired from show business so he wouldn't have to watch her kiss another man.

I retired about the same time.

Angie's father Ralph and I are still friends and he consults with me periodically. He's the one who told me Robert was caught cheating on Angie with her friend Julia. Julia was the one who told Kenton That Angie had the affair with Henri. Their marriage lasted less than a year. Ralph wasted no time in firing him.

The last we heard, he was the manager of a fast food restaurant.

Angie moved back into her office at the plant and, according to Ralph, is honestly trying to learn something about the business.

Again, according to Ralph, she doesn't date local guys often, but she learned that Henri is still in Washington and they have renewed their friendship.

Christina and I rarely leave the lake except to visit her family in Montgomery. Everything we want or need is just a boat ride away.
