I have a process to turn the mp3's into VBR variants with no loss or recoding (shrinking often dozens of megs from the mp3); I'm told it puts more work on the decoder. However the space savings once wrapped in a zip are.... negligible. we're talking maybe 500-1000k per zip. So likely it's condensing down the chunks of silence. I highly doubt 7z packing would result in hardly any better compression.

And converting to AAC depends on what level of terrible you want. Often 0.7 is suitable for non-music and porn (and you could go much lower, but the audio isn't pleasing to the ear even if it's legible), and sounds fine. But the savings aren't enough to do.

Oh well, nice to have.
