Thank you for the generous post. I noticed something very odd with the Surgeons Wife. There's just a few pages to it, yet the file size is around 1 MB. I opened it with Calibres book editor to see what's what, and confirmed there's almost nothing there, with the sizes of everything not remotely totalling 1 MB and nothing containing a whole books worth of missing content. When I quit the editor without saving, Calibre now reported the file size as 200 kb. Weird.
