Amazon removing download option on February 26th

OK, I just saw a video about this on my YouTube feed.

I also googled the topic and found numerous hits about it here

It isn't clear to me that this will affect the Kindle PC app or not.

I just downloaded a few books using that and didn't get the note that the various google links said happens if you use the Amazon website.

Well he certainly makes it sound like the PC app won't allow me to download either.

Not sure. It might just be where it caches say 5 books and then deletes them when you download other books, so you have to re-download via wifi. The idea being that the internet speed is fast enough people won't notice or something. Except it was mentioned a 5 cent per download fee to the author.

It also sounded like a total pain to get out of their 'amazon unlimited' system/plan. I don't know.

I may have misheard him, but I thought he said something to the effect that Amazon is limiting distribution to kindles.

I don't own one, I use my iPad for e-books. The reason I download is because I decided long ago I wanted to use a single app on my iPad for my library, I didn't want to have to launch multiple apps to figure out where a specific book was.

I chose the built in apple books app. because it could handle epub as well as PDF, and at that time iTunes handled books and keeping a library organized in iTunes was pretty easy.

Many books on Amazon didn't use DRM back then so they could be easily converted in calibre.

Yes, there is a kindle app for the iPad, and it's likely I will have to start using that after the 26th for any new books I purchase.

I'm going to start checking with any other ebook vendor before buying on Amazon.

I tried to download a book today from my library that I bought years ago and was able to do it without any issue.

I'm not sure if the 26th was an "after the 26th" or "on the 26th", so I'll try again tomorrow to see if anything changes.

Well the plot thickens.

I looked at Shameless Book Deals to see if anything was free at Amazon today, and saw some sort of tentacle erotic book. Not my normal cup of tea, but it would do for an experiment.

So I bought it and then tried to download it using the kindle for PC app.

It downloaded without a problem. Now, I'm using version 2.0.1 (70350), since that's the version that works with the DRM ripping software I have.

You can get that version here

Saw this video on my YouTube feed, and it appears there are other options for downloading books from Amazon.

Well, the bastages changed something with the PC kindle software.

I can no longer download "new" books, haven't figured out the exact date that is the threshold, with the version 2.0.1 (70350) that works with my DRM ripping software.

When I get the new version 2.7 (70978) I can download them, but I can't rip the DRM.

So, I put one of the books that shouldn't have DRM because it says on the page "Simultaneous device usage ‏ : ‎ Unlimited". That's what that description is supposed to mean.

However, calibre couldn't convert it to an epub.

Harumph.

PC app won't allow me to download
Yeah they changed something on April 22nd and any book published after that date needs the latest PC app to download.

None of the DRM ripping programs that I know of, work with that new version of the app.

The only work around I know of is to get an older kindle, download it on wi-fi and then use the DRM ripping software.

The latest version of Epubor can be quite costly, but it does work with Kindle for PC beyond Kindle for PC 2.1.7 so it is all right to purchase a new kindle and download the stuffs if you can afford Epubor.

If not, just try to find your stuffs elsewhere. You don't always have to go to Amazon.

Especially since you don't really "own" a book you buy from Amazon. If they remove it from their library, for whatever reason, you can no longer access it.

So Epubor finally is actually working full bore again? I miss how easy it was in the past with KU. I have all but given up that route. Calibre DeDRM is fraught with issues especially dealing with .kfx files. It takes so much work then it used to. I would love another standalone tool to be made. Theres a reddit with a step by step guide but I find nearly half simply wont work.

Ok, to update this issue, here's what I do that works.

I use the Kindle for PC, version 2.9.1 (71006) to download from Amazon, rip off the DRM using epubor ( not a free program). Then import to Calibre to update metadata.
