Persephone Whitehall Clarke (from our earlier historical retrospectives here and here ) continues to be a subject of fascination among the silent film buffs of the world. This April 1st, a box was discovered in an attic that had once belonged to Hatty Fielding Brown, assistant and amateur photographer. She was rumored to have been attached to Persephone for some years, and the discovery of these photographs would seem to indicate that they indeed had some kind of relationship, professional, or otherwise. Of course, the titillating nature of the find sparked a wave of new interest in her films and reexamination of old interviews which were combed over to see her reveal her personal views on same-sex relationships.
Specifically the three extremely rare color photographs astounded collectors worldwide, and were twice stolen from auction winners. The dream lives on, long after those who dreamt it are lost.
