A Miss-Judgement 171-209
CBlack really really likes that pose of two girls pressing their cheeks together while hugging. I can' think of a single story he's done that doesn't have it.
Kind of like how all his stories have big hair and for a long while they always ended up with the girl going redhead.

the use of transsexual and focusing on the outdated living one year as a woman requirement are the only missteps but they are tone-deaf as hell.

Is the term transsexual not used anymore? I hear transwoman and transman more, but I thought that was the gender non-specific version of it. Also didn't know the living one year requirement was no longer a thing.

Nowadays transsexual is typically referring to trans people who have medically transitioned/gotten surgical intervention. For younger people it's more widely seen as insulting or derisive and can be more easily misunderstood because of the use of "sexual". Transgender is the catchall term for someone who transitions whether that be socially or medically.

Referring to Robin as a transvestite instead of transgender in this instance is the tone-deaf part. Calling someone who transitioned socially, like Robin is claiming she has, a transvestite is essentially the same as calling them a pervert because transvestitism has historically been associated with fetishistic behavior. A modern-day doctor that specializes in Trans healthcare would probably never refer to a person like Robin in that way.

Generally, 'transsexual' isn't used in a community-sense outside of people who refer to themselves with the term. The term 'transgender' or the umbrella term 'trans' is simply used instead. Trans men and women who transitioned in earlier decades tend to still refer to themselves as 'transsexual', but more often than not, younger people use 'transgender'.

But yeah, living as your gender for a year really isn't a thing in the US anymore. You just go to a clinic that does informed consent, sign a waiver, and then go pick up your meds at the pharmacy you asked for the prescription to be sent to. You don't need to be 'out' or present at whatever gender or whatever. A lot of trans women will just get on HRT and then remain in the closet until they feel ready to come out publicly.

The biggest issue with a lot of these stories is that the author clearly doesn't have out trans friends. The whole "I'm ashamed of my secret" business is really just not how things work most of the times now, especially for trans women that are Robin's age. She'd be goofing off on the internet with her trans friends even before realizing that she was trans herself lol

Huh...interesting. I thought maybe there would be a required phase of counseling at least. Not a required year being out or anything, but maybe a few sessions discussing personal history, self identity, long term required steps for transition, etc.

About the whole "living for a year" thing: the only mention about it being a requirement is made by Rob/Robin... BEFORE doing their research. So it could very well be a mistake *on the part of the character*, who was not at this point particularly informed or interested on what is involved in transitioning, and was likely going on something they had heard in the past. Harold's choice in fabricating a backstory was to better convince his wife, not because he needed Rob to be able to undergo hormone therapy immediately. Similarly, the doctor never talked about Robin having "fulfilled the required time", she just asks why "she" had not done anything further than dressing up in all this time.

However, I understand from the messages above (my own knowledge in this area is limited) that the terminology used by the doctor is outdated -- and a professional SHOULD know the proper terms. If so, this is either a research fail on CBlack's part OR a deliberate choice to set the story in a specific timeframe in the past.

However... from what cursory research I was able to do, those "vacation breasts," while real, ARE rather new and they don't offer a "several weeks" form of it. So this is a (slightly) sci-fi element, which would put the timeframe of the story into the near *future*, not into the past. So, yeah, I guess CBlack goofed with the proper terminology.

But AFAIK, it's just a single speech balloon in a story that is otherwise fine. If one really is unable to overlook this, one can interpret it as the doctor deliberately being blunt to make her point across.

The interesting thing I noticed in this story is that *so far* the characters (other than the frat-holes) have been playing remarkably straight. Rob admitted upfront how he was deceived into going to the lecture in drag, Harold did not attempt to twist his arm, just predicted accurately what the frat assholes might do. To use the Fictionmania terminology, this is not so much a "caught with consequences", "tricked or secretly forced" or "blackmailed," but rather a "deals, bets or dares" situation. Harold offered Rob a deal; a (very good) job and housing in exchange for "Robin" playing a role in Abby's political career.

Honestly it's so nice to read "characters" that talk and have natural flowing dialogue among themselves rather than a type of archetype we all see in this types of stories. And also good to see that nobody is forcing mc and being evil/asshole.

I guess sometimes it's just nice to have good simple story rather than it having twist or some nonsensical plot revelation. Enjoying this very much for now. Hope Cblack keeps this up and doesn't make mc some sex-crazed nympho.
