[DangerousLines] Pirates of the Coal Sack

Artist's note:
"Thirty-one pages. Forty-six minutes. There’s a lot happening in a very short period of time here, and most of it on the bridge. I hope it didn’t get claustrophobic. This is really a space battle issue, with very little room for anything else, but it seemed like time. And the Battle of Earth is one of the biggest battles in Federation history, even discounting that the Federation is on both sides of it.

I still managed to get some character touches in. Song’s objection to rescuing the senators will be a topic of later discussion; it nearly turned into a four page digression, but I felt like there wasn’t enough time (either for the crew or for the readers) to deal with the issues more than superficially, so that’ll be something for the future. And Galens’ relationship with her mother, and by extension the crew’s relations with the senators, will be a significant topic. I feel bad that the Sisters didn’t get any camera time this issue, but there just wasn’t a logical place or time for their reunion.

I did like giving Phoenix some external scale. We never see starships near objects whose size we really know, so they remain somewhat amorphous. Letting the ship loom over Senator Galens’ ten-bedroom mansion was satisfying. The purpose of a planetary shield isn’t to stop a planetary bombardment. Covering an entire planet with a shield that strong is beyond the energy resources of even a major world like Earth.

The purpose is to slow down an invasion, force a landing force to be channeled through a few breaches, and facilitate ground-based defense. Key locations like San Francisco and Paris are protected by their own, much tougher, shields; they’re easier to take by ground assault than by bombardment. But to make that assault you have to penetrate the planetary shield.

Nor are planetary defenses always operational. On a ship, one gets accustomed to always having the enormous energies of a warp drive available. To bring city and planetary shields on line, other parts of the planet have to be blacked out. Industry stops. Lights dim. The whole power grid has to go into war-fighting mode, and that leaves the planet open to siege. Even shore batteries, with their own reactors to recharge their electro-plasma systems, rely on the power grid to reach optimal rates of fire.

And shore batteries can’t really defend a planet. A warship can stand off with its warp drive extending the range of its weapons and bombard the planet while remaining out of range of the planet or orbital weapons. It’s not possible to put warp coils on a planet, and putting them on an orbital platform is essentially making it a ship. But a ship landing troops has to come within range of shore guns; they exist to thwart landings, not bombardments.

The faster a ship goes, the less maneuverable it is. At flank speed, it basically can’t turn without putting major stress on the hull. The structural integrity field can reduce that, but Relentless didn’t have time to divert power to hers; Phoenix did. So Phoenix came out of her violent maneuver shaken up but basically undamaged, while Relentless did herself an injury. Then when she crash stopped, that imposed more hull stress, ultimately knocking out half her power.

USS Enterprise, USS Reliant and MIDAS array models by Marc Bell. I have lost the source for the Baker-class destroyer that is the basis of the C-class destroyer."

"It’s been a rough couple of months on the personal front, and thisissue started to get away from me. I thought it was going to be just aslice of life and tie up a few loose ends from High Barbary, but thefurther I got into it the more threads I found that needed to be atleast picked up, if not tied off. After a lot of reshuffling, I decidedit needed to be at least two issues. And here we are.

The most urgent thing was Sonne’s situation; Harding and Athenadidn’t want to let it fester. Obviously there’s still more to say aboutit, and closing this issue will open others. So will the Senators asthey rub up against the crew.

It’s only one page, but the scene between Bowlin and the Bosun in thegarden is one that’s important to me. Too often in fiction we treatshooting bad guys as easy. In reality, killing another human being, especially up close, is traumatic no matter how justified you are. Whenwe treat it otherwise, we make it harder for our combat veterans whohave to deal with the real trauma they suffered on our behalf. I wantedto acknowledge how hard it can be. I got some help from someone whoworks with veterans to make sure I got things right, but any errors aremy own."

Artist's note:
"The situation on Earth continues to unfold, and the repercussions still haven’t been fully felt. But as much as the Federation would wish otherwise, this is going to have repercussions beyond the their borders. There is blood in the water; the sharks are coming.

Sonne’s situation is clarified. This has been brewing for a longtime, and, as Sister Thorn and Mother Lovelace explained, it’s just the beginning of things most people don’t know. Robert Bloch was aprotegé of H.P. Lovecraft and wrote three Star Trek episodes (as well as the novel Psycho). He’s not the only link between the two mythoses, but it’s the most obvious vector. And now Phoenix has brushed up against the cosmic. This isn’t Q we’re dealing with."

Artist's note:
"In some ways, the stars came right for this issue. In others, it wasa cosmic nightmare.

The Old Ones have been woven through Star Trek since thefirst season. The Old Ones made the androids of Exo III in “What AreLittle Girls Made Of?” The second season episode “Catspaw” gave usSylvia and Korob, extra-galactic servants of the Old Ones andessentially evil wizards who rule Pyris VII. Later the same season, in“By Any Other Name,” we learned of the extra-galactic Kelvans, immensebeings with a scores of tentacles and superior, emotionless minds. Theshape-shifting, tentacular Vendorians from the animated episode “TheSurvivor” could’ve been ripped from Lovecraft’s brain before beingmoderated for 1970s animation–then Lower Decks suggested theylay their eggs in humanoids’ throats.

It was time to bring these cosmic horrors on camera. I’ve never donehorror before. When I went to try to actually tell the story, I foundout how hard it is in this medium. I took a college course in horrorfilmmaking, and as I got into it I realized the nature of the mediumworks against the easy ways to do horror. Comics can’t do a jump scare.I can’t render things as squamous or rugose or cyclopean. It tookseveral false starts to figure out how to build the tension. You’ll haveto be the judge of how well I did.

It also took me a ridiculously long time to realize this was MotherLovelace’s story. I tried out versions of it with Athena and Karolleading the landing party, but it should’ve been obvious that the themeof confronting the creeping alien horror at the heart of theFederation’s institutions belonged to the Sisters of St. Barbara. Once Ihad that, the character arc snapped into place almost immediately. And,since the Sisters aren’t trained warriors and explorers, the horrorelements became a little easier to arrange.

I don’t think I’ll be doing too much more horror, at least notdeliberately. Trying to work out nightmare fuel literally cost me sleep.I’m glad I tried it, but I think I learned what I wanted to from it, andmade the story points I needed to make.

I spent way too much time carefully crafting the servo. The originalservo appears in the TOS episode “Gary Seven;” an updated versionappeared in Picard’s second season. The transmuter is from“Catspaw,” where it was a necklace rather than a ring.

Our music this time is “Hoist theColors” by Hans Zimmer, from Pirates of the Caribbean: AtWorld’s End. But we don’t share the title for the story; our titlehas a different meaning. We finally get some explicit explanation of theSisters’… not theology, but guiding beliefs. And Mother Lovelace hasresolved how to serve those principles going forward."

Artist's note:
"The Age of Sail and the Old West have some common themes. Theyromanticize wanderers, especially wandering outlaws, making theirfortune in an untamed and uncivilized wilderness. For this arc, we’lltouch on some of that crossover. “Doggies” in cowboy parlance areorphaned cattle. Yippie ki yay!

And so, here we go a-pirating again, this time more by chance thanplanning. There’s a price to be paid for not planning. That’s going tobe felt for a while.

New Yellowstone is the creation of Dialup Hero, who posted it onSlushe acouple of years ago. We talked about doing a crossover (after he posteda crossoverimage). The Pirates universe is rather different from his,so it’s probably best to consider this an homage rather than acrossover. Still, if cowgirls with ginormous boobage are your thing, check out the original.

Under Terran law, rights are human rights–aliens bydefinition have no rights. They have the legal status of animals, petsat best, livestock at worst. For economic reasons they’re given moreautonomy than one would give, say, a herd of buffalo, but in the view ofTerran law, they don’t even own their own clothes. Rigellians can put aprice on anything. So none of our people sees anything wrong with ashipload of non-human slaves; it’s certainly not strange. Slaves arealso not unskilled labor; automation is cheaper. Slavery is a way toensure that cost of training a worker doesn’t walk out the door to acompetitor; the slaveowner gets the full benefit of his investment inhis property.

So what does Starbase 9 need with 250 alien shipwrights?

Harding has picked up enough Aenean culture to treat Avar as heexpects during the interview. Patronage is the parallel social systemthat runs alongside the Aenean house structure, providing a well-defined(and very harshly socially enforced) set of obligations that allowsAeneans to have some trust in people they’re not related to by blood.Historically, on desert Alfheim, the first patrons were those whocontrolled access to reliable water supplies; the sharing of waterbecame symbolic rulership.

Phoenix was named Eihss’dhael, literally “Sunbird,”in Aenean. The eihss’dhael is a mythical bird that carries thesouls of the dead to the sun, where both are consumed in elemental fire. The bird is then reborn from its ashes and returns to the land of theliving, sometimes bearing messages from the afterlife. All of this wasmentioned way back in issue#3.

Captain Ngo’s been drilling Relentless for this moment. Helost Phoenix at Vritraand again at Earth, but this time he was the one with the plan and the initiative.Phoenix is a tough bird, but no ship is able to stand up toconcerted assault without her shields. If he’d been more aggressive, ormore confident that he actually had Phoenix targeted, itcould’ve been all over. Harding is kicking himself.

The P-class destroyer is based on the Reindeer byCitrullux. The Music-class transport is based on theBaker-class model by Brad R. Torgersen."
