[Pollenfiend] - WIP - The Blooming Rose

For the initial raw text-to-image generation, I kept it to 512x512 resolution with an x2 usage of Hires Fix. The key here is to make a lot of generations and I try to find a pose that I like. Sometimes Iāll use ControlNet for the pose but itās been hit or miss. I also use Adetailer to add clarity to the facial features of the subject. For this artwork, the character is the Blooming Roseās hostess / front desk attendant Evelyn. This character has a few key features from the story that are important in the prompt - she wears a long red dress with side slit, has pale skin with loosely curled shoulder-length red hair (i.e. she looks Irish), and for facial consistency between pictures I made her face a mix between the face LORA mentioned above and a slight blend of actresses/models Sarah Bolger and Stella Maxwell. When changing the background, you can focus the prompts on just environmental details and not the main subject (i.e. character) related keywords. And of course you wonāt need Adetailer or the face LORA (unless youāre doing backgrounds with crowds of people). Hereās the metadata.

In this picture and a few others later in the workflow, I use GIMP as image editing software to roughly sketch in colors and outlines of details I want to fill in with inpainting. Without this step, you would need to crank up the denoising level but that could lead to big inconsistencies with the rest of the picture where you arenāt inpainting.

Inpainting along the edges of a roughly edited part of the picture is pretty good for blending the two together much more seamlessly.

An image editor like GIMP is also good at applying effects like blurring, done in this picture to keep the focus on the main subject character in the middle.

Used GIMP again here to add finer character details like her gold jewellery and her āallergy faceā. The reddened nose and eyes are done with a small brush going over those facial features with very low opacity and ādarken onlyā mode for the brush, so it keeps the facial detail but just adds the reddish hue on top.

Inpainting over the roughly edited allergy face can be tricky. You might need to play around quite a bit with prompts, denoise levels, and producing many generations for you to pick the best one. Hereās some metadata for this particular inpainting over her nose and cheeks. Youāll notice that I didnāt let the main SD model do much at all (denoise=0.02) and relied heavily on Adetailer (denoise=0.18). I find that if the denoise level is too high, it will create a āregularā looking face and typically not what Iām looking for in terms of a red nose or allergy face. This is because it will denoise away all the image editing done on GIMP and overuse ānormalā facial details from the reference actresses and face LORAs where the photos of course are not of people suffering from allergiesā¦ One day later I might train my own LORAs for allergy faces and sneezy expressions. Mid-sneeze is especially difficult at the moment.

I use GIMP to remove skin features and imperfections like moles, blemishes, etc. This isnāt because I find moles unattractive (some are called ābeauty marksā after all) but rather because they are impossible to generate consistently on the same part of the body in different generations with different poses of the same character (I guess unless it is a very prominent feature like a distinctive birthmark or something that is always there in a trained LORA). By keeping the skin clear, itās easier to believe itās the same character in various different scenes and poses.

I found the face of the additional character off to the right side a bit too distracting so I ended up cropping out the edges a little.

When ready to post, I upscale a little more. In this case I used 4x_NickelbackFS_72000_G (the same upscaler model when I was using Hires Fix earlier in the workflow).
