A friend of mine travelled to Cairo and Petra with his platinum-blonde girlfriend in the early 1990s. No matter whom she tried to talk to, whether a bus driver or anyone else, they treated her as if she were invisible. She wouldn’t have been able to get by on her own, because the Muslims would only speak to her boyfriend.
