New book 'Castaway Wife' is set to release this Monday.
You should really let the author have a chance to earn some money before you look to posting their work for free, at least a couple months (6 would be better).
There are so many excellent books and stories already available here and elsewhere for free, that looking for brand new release ahead of time is kinda disrespectful to the creator, unless they choose to be the one who decides to put it out there for free.

To do otherwise is to just discourage them from sharing their work with the world, and instead keep it to themselves.

I know of a few authors and artists who refuse to publish their work on these grounds.

When should you provide it for free. That's a good question. There's always other content and you're fighting for attention against hundreds of millions of other pieces of work, many being freely available. If it's a physical product, i'd wait until the printing/production is done (usually 3-4 years). But Ebooks, 6 months, or a year sure, i'd wait for that. Hollywood and current major corporations i have zero faith in anymore and don't care if they are out day 1.

For video games (and movies and other forms of entertainment) the first couple months is most critical and where the bulk of any revenue is generated. I understand that once you release something on the internet, it's impossible to control it or stop it, but i agree, unless it's some conclusion to a long running series that you have to have right now, it should probably wait. Then there's also people who can't/won't pay and getting it now or in 10 years doesn't matter. (Well that's not true, you're excited to read it now, and apathetic and lost interest 10 years so sooner is a bit better than never)

Personally I think the problem is copyright is waaaay too long. Originally it was 20 years or so, and has been extended multiple times (Heavily by Disney whenever their works were close to getting public domain'd) to where it's in the US currently Life+70, or like 130 for a corporation. That's WAAAAY too long. As we've seen corporations get a number of IP's or items under their belt, get greedy, then do nothing but remakes/remasters, or sit on their IP's selling them infinitum. Once the original creators of said companies/corporations are out they just become greedy leeches who are willing to destroy their entire empire for a few extra dollars now rather than caring for their creations and name long term. We only have to see the downfall of Star Wars being acquired to see it's fall from grace from a beloved property, to a milked cash cow where no one cares anymore.

People who have love for a work would be within a couple decades, so say if Whinnie the Pooh went public domain and kids that read/watched the show as kids had access to it, would move on to do more Whinnie the pooh adventures, maybe IN SPAAACCCEEE (I'd love to read Pooh and Piglet going around in a cardboard rocket or wearing makeshift pretend-ware using sauna suits and laundry baskets on their heads as helmets, exploring a moon-like setting and other silliness and even adding more stuffed animals to the mix) or Pooh leaving Christopher robin and being taken by his son/daughter in new adventures in the more modern age, etc. But no, instead what's left is people who became apathetic and disinterested, and the thing made is... Blood and honey, a horror film because the Pooh went public but little else, and they gotta do a cash grab rather than have care for the property.

Rant aside, don't disincentivize the creator from making the bulk of their revenue. We should appreciate works we love, and support authors we love (i certainly bought a lot of Xanth books back in the day), not make them feel weeks or months of work was basically not worth their time.

IMO: Not that it is a definitive timeframe, but I'd say for creations with physical releases it should be about the time they hit the resale shops, like e-bay or half-price books or something similar, or the wholesale markets like Kindle Unlimited.

But unless the author is posting it for free somewhere like Literotica, or such, definitely not within days or weeks of the initial release.

Now don't get me wrong, I find it ridiculous the prices some of these release come out at:
$2.99 USD for a chapter, or short story, 14 pages or even shorter is absolutely highway robbery, especially when you find out how short it is after you purchase it, and find that the author neglected proof-reading prior to release.

As a teenager growing up I could get 2-3 physical paperbacks for a hour's labor - but those had to be printed, bound, distributed, and sold by many parties being involved in getting it into my hands. Now it's just the author (proofreader's if they bother) and the venue they post to. When, and _IF_ I ever release my works, I'll be looking for donations through paypal, or something similar (expecting $1.00USD or less for the most part), and I write Novella's at the minimum. I'm surprised more authors don't go this route, and post via free sites to prevent Amazon price and deletion style shenanigans from affecting them. Because eventually all works get posted for free.

BTW: I loved Xanth, I even buddy read the first book with a friend recently - Did you ever try his Bio of a Space Tyrant.

Yeah that's a bit excessive. I mean if you are doing serialized works that's fine, but it seems more like a Patreon bonus as a preview before the work is completed, than per chapter.

Or at least it's suppose to. Copyright is so long right now no one considers when it goes public domain as it should, and treat it as theirs forever, even as companies will destroy something they created rather than letting it go free, turning the purpose of copyright on it's head, as you're suppose to be able to live off your works, but it's suppose to be a net gain for the world in the end.

Can't say i have. Though i do have those books on tap, gotta say his style has long since fallen out of favor for me.

I'd bought lots of his books from Barnes and Nobles when i was a teenager (and those $15-$20 paperback book prices back in '94...). Mostly got Xanth trying to get the whole series, but also the Mode Series, Incarnations of Immortality, Adept series, along with singles and unrelated one-offs like Letters from Jenny. Though I'd had a character appear in one (or more?) of his books, though it's embaressing that 15 years after giving permission as a child and then hearing the original description that's innocent and naive. But what can you do?

Smashwords has the option for the author to specify "you set the price", so that's an easy way for you to do your donations plan.

Smashwords has two other advantages over Amazon.

First, if the author revises the book you can download the new version. With Amazon, you're stuck with the version you originally purchased. Now this makes sense with printed versions, since there is cost associated with printing the second, third, etc. editions, but digital? It actually probably costs Amazon more to keep track of the version any individual purchased and maintain that copy on their servers, than to simply keep one version of any given book and let anyone who purchased it download it/read it.

The second thing is that if you read deep into the ELUA for Amazon, technically you are renting the book, you don't own it. So should they get cranky with you at some future date, they can remove any given book from your library.

That's one reason I download everything, and put it in my Calibre library.

How do you deal with the serious Calibre lag when the library gets too large?
I finally started breaking my library into Genre's Smut, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, etc... Because I found at about 4k books the lag becomes noticable.

The same for streaming services, and storefronts like Steam and GoG, where you don't actually own the game. A lot more people are waking up to this though, and we might actually see things change.

I presently have over 4.1K books in my Calibre library and don't notice any lag.

I've got a solid state HD and my PC is an Alienware gaming rig, so I've got a fast computer, so that might play a role.

Where does the lag manifest?
