I would like to emphasise that I am ā€“ without any ifs or buts ā€“ not a fan of Dan. Nevertheless, I can understand his behaviour.
(Ultimately, the author D.S. chose this path, and it is entirely at his discretion).
At the outset, Dan and Sarah harboured a desire to realise a shared fetish fantasy.
Due to Sarahā€™s excessive sexual debauchery and indecent behaviour, the situation spiralled out of control over time.

The first time she had sexual intercourse with Lester, whilst Dan was away on business in another city and sent her a few text messages from his flatmate and main rival, made it clear that Sarah was prepared to go beyond the bounds of what was permissible in order to realise their shared fantasy.

The overall behaviour of the individual concerned, characterised by low self-esteem, verbal attacks and a strong willingness to submit to external influence, allows conclusions to be drawn about the causes: due to the loss of his job, he is no longer able to fulfil his family obligations or find suitable employment that would allow him to meet his financial commitments. This leads to increasing dependence on external support systems. The situation is shaped by the interaction between Lester and the individual in question. Lester displays repeated, disrespectful behaviour, which manifests itself in the form of belittling and physical violence. Sarah stands by Lester and even encourages him.

I have both a theoretical grounding and practical experience in this field. This stems from several years of supporting people who have lost their jobs and found themselves in social difficulty. In their desperation, these people have reached a point where they are even clutching at straws in an attempt to find a way out of this difficult situation.

Dan finds himself in a precarious situation, which Sarah shamelessly exploits, allowing Lester to humiliate him in an unacceptable manner.
However, I expect that the tide will turn for the better and that Dan will one day achieve the financial independence he so desires.
I believe that he will then embark on a campaign of revenge. Not for Sarah, not for her, but for himself.

I understand the slow descent, the one little sacrifice after another. I totally get all of that. I get that this is a deeply ingrained fetish for Dan, and I get that it has changed the marriage dynamic.

But it's way past being about sex. Lester openly disrespects both of them. Even after Dan asserted himself in chapter 41, he let Lester do the whole "breed Sarah" thing after all of that, and oh she can't leave, Lester controls them, etc.
