H.R. Giger, Jean âMoebiusâ Giraud, Chris Foss, Orson Welles, Salvador DalĂ, Mick Jagger and Pink Floyd were among the extraordinary artists and collaborators involved in Alejandro Jodorowskyâs legendary attempt to bring Frank Herbertâs
Dune to the screen in the mid-1970s.
Jodorowskyâs Dune is a 2013 documentary directed by Frank Pavich about the making â and ultimate failure â of what was intended to become one of the most ambitious science-fiction films ever conceived.
Jodorowsky, the Chilean filmmaker behind
El Topo and
The Holy Mountain, spent years assembling an extraordinary creative team. H.R. Giger was brought in to develop the dark, biomechanical visual world of the film, while Moebius created hundreds of storyboard drawings, Chris Foss designed spacecraft and environments, and Dan OâBannon worked on the screenplay and special effects.
The planned cast was equally extraordinary: Orson Welles, Salvador DalĂ, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Jodorowskyâs own young son were all associated with the project. Pink Floyd was approached to provide the music.
The film itself was never made. Jodorowsky and his team spent years developing the project, producing an enormous visual and conceptual blueprint for a movie that ultimately proved too ambitious and expensive to finance. Although the production collapsed, its ideas and artists went on to influence some of the most important science-fiction films of the following decades, including
Alien,
Star Wars and
Blade Runner.
The documentary reconstructs this extraordinary unrealized project through interviews, concept art, storyboards and Jodorowskyâs own recollections. Rather than simply presenting the project as a failure, it examines how a film that was never shot nevertheless had a lasting impact on the history of cinema.
It is, in that sense, the story of
âthe greatest movie never made.â
