“Bodyguard?” I snorted, “I don't need a bloody bodyguard!”
He maintained his friendly, amused smile:
“Right, because you'd actually need two, love: one to look after you, and one to keep your beak shut so you can listen without freaking out,” he then returned a little more seriously.
“I know that the Pezak can be annoying with his theatrics and his pompous behaviour, and that you two didn't get off to the best start. But you really should have given him a bit more room to manoeuvre.”
He turned to me and got really serious now:
“While you've been sleeping it off, a lot of things have been going on, and none of it in a good direction,” he then continued, and I struggled to listen without freaking out.
“Your OITC didn't like the outcome of your mission at all. All you had to do was dutifully deliver your probe and the wrong offer, and then return to the office. The fact that you got so... intimate with the Pezak was not planned. Just like the unmasking of your colleague C2. Especially not that you knew about it.”
He rose to his feet, built up his impressive stature in front of me, and then continued:
“They've got their cleaner on you. Very unpleasant chap! Believe me when I tell you that you don't want to have anything to do with him. Not even when he's not on a mission to make you disappear forever.”
I can't say why, but I took his warning seriously. Perhaps because he made a much more down-to-earth impression than the Pezak.
“I assume the name Ayerton Frost means something to you,” he added.
“Of course,” I interjected, “who doesn't know him?”
“Well, he's got his fingers in this game, and he's obviously using them to put the pressure on.”
“What on earth would he have to do with it?” I replied.
“You mean, apart from the fact that he has an interest in manipulating the global markets and using the influence he has gained to push forward his vision of 'Earth 2.0'?”
'Earth 2.0', the much-discussed and equally widely ridiculed vision of this man. He had become the - still - second-richest person in the world thanks to his revolutionary products in the fields of IT and communication and by tapping the mineral resources in the deep sea.
And whose confused political views caused amusement and equally great concern.
His 'Earth 2.0' envisaged a complete reorganization of the entire planet. Starting with the even colonization of the available habitats, through the balanced distribution of accessible resources, to a unified faith and government.
Complete bollocks.
“You can't take that seriously,” I replied, shaking my head.
“Many people take it seriously enough, my dear. For all sorts of reasons. Lots of people who are not to be trifled with and who you - albeit unintentionally - stand in the way of....to get back to the actual topic of the day.”
He squatted down in front of me
“I would love to free you from these cable ties,” he then said.
“Can I trust you to stay peaceful?”
