That was a pretty strong statement though!
Lucius stood up again, and I got up from my chair.
“How are you going to do that?” I asked him.
“Well,” he replied with a slight smile.
“There are certain things that I know about, and I know that Sir Walter wants to keep them hidden at all costs. So I'm going to make him an... An offer.”
He cleared his throat.
“And I'd best get straight to work. In the meantime, why don't you have a look at the information we've collected? I've sent everything you need to the computer in your old room. You'll also find more comfortable clothes there from your last stay under my roof.”
It sounded like a suggestion, but I knew that he was very keen for us to do just that.
I suspected he was a little uncomfortable about using such an obvious means of blackmail. And he didn't want me to look over his shoulder, while he was doing so.
So I agreed with a quick, “Sounds good!”.
'My old room' was on the top floor of the three-storey house.
It had been my home for a week when I had worked with Lucius through a mountain of documents in my defence during my trial.
It was a small, simple room. Probably once meant for a maid. But it was equipped with everything you needed and even had its own bathroom, albeit a tiny one.
And so, not too much later, I found myself in these familiar surroundings, dressed in clothes that I had totally forgotten,
immersed in the information that Lucius and his assistant had gathered.
And I was simultaneously disgusted and fascinated by how far-reaching and deep Frost's deception was.
As well as how fragile the structure was that he had conned together!
A few little hints here and there, at the right time and to the right shareholders, and the supposed value of the “Frost empire” would plummet and dissolve into debt.
And I was so gripped by hunting fever and rediscovering my long-lost expertise that I didn't notice the figure that quietly entered my room.
A quiet clearing of a throat behind me made me jump up and instinctively take a defensive stance.
The young man who had sneaked up on me so successfully took a step back and raised his hands in a placating gesture.
He didn't look very frightened, though.
In any case, the smile on his friendly face did not suggest that.
“Excuse me, Miss Hanna, I didn't mean to scare you. I'm Robin”, he explained in a friendly manner and was very calm.
And... had he just addressed me in the same way as Lucius?
I ignored it for the moment and relaxed my posture. The intruder didn't seem really threatening.
Rather, he looked like I wasn't sure whether I would call him a “man” yet.
In any case, he looked like he wasn't fully grown yet.
He was slim, not much taller than me and a delicate fuzz adorned his still boyish face, which had something oriental about it.
His really beautiful eyes were striking, with eyelashes that many women would envy.
And they also looked much more grown-up than the rest of him.
“Okay,” I said, quickly interrupting the scrutiny of my counterpart, and he lowered his hands.
“Hanna is quite enough,” I added.
“Yes, okay,” he smiled back, “I just slipped that out because Lucius always talks about you like that, the way he always calls me 'Mr Winter'.”
Then he held out his hand to me politely.
“Anyway, I'm very pleased to finally meet you in person!”
And I confess that I was quite taken with his good manners and pleasant politeness, which didn't fit in at all with the chaos in his hacker's den.
“Likewise,” I said rather curtly, and was a little irritated myself about it.
But I took his proffered hand.
“Lucius sent me,” he explained, unperturbed.
“He says step one is complete, and we can talk about the next ones over dinner.”
