Take a look at the ‘waterproof’ cassette "walkman" (radio included) strapped round the girl’s waist. It was red, it was the model Sony WM-F5 Sports Walkman Portable Cassette Player with Radio Tuner (1983 - 1988). Their Sony Sport Yellow ‘waterproof’ Walkman model (WM-35) came out later, in 1986. I’ve never seen that red Walkman model.

Walkman was a1979 Sony trademark. The device has become so ubiquitous on the market that the Walkman brand has become a generic term for any ‘miniaturised’ portable cassette player.

Just like the battery-powered (LR8) portable cassette player, the battery life didn’t last very long in cassette mode. And when the batteries were running low, the playback speed of the tape would be affected – it would slow down.

This marked the beginning of the trend towards miniaturisation, though not for portable cassette players – they had to be big, eye-catching and, of course, noisy.
