It means recognizing that ethical engagement occurs through interpretation criticism and discourse not through the presumption that creators must preemptively conform to a single moral framework. Protecting the most vulnerable by denying adult audiences their interpretive autonomy replaces dialogue with paternalism.

In summary the weakness of this type of argument is not ethical concern itself but the implicit belief that adults are incapable of responsibly engaging with fiction combined with a selective application of its own principles. This undermines both artistic freedom and the intelligence of the audience.
