That's the thing, it isn't set in a fictional past but a non descript alternative present, unless I missed some intro that characterized the setting as regressive. I know it's sort of a trope but it really feels cartonish/juvenile.I mean, this story takes place in a "Mad Men" C-Suite / Secretary executive setting.
To look at it more broadly, the purpose in using this setting is that the male protagonist hopes to rise into the C-Suite as an executive. Now they have to experience the regressive corporate culture still in place at a lot of places from the point of view of a woman. They are still expecting to have a voice in decision making and I think they will quickly see the lane that women are shuffled into in most organizations like this.
If the company here were more broad-minded and had, say, a DEI initiative and an inclusive corporate culture, you wouldn't have this disconnect between expectation and reality, and thus the story wouldn't work.
