a small remark:
The sizes of these epubs seemed larger than usual - the 14 files total ± 400MB
Reason for this are the many included images, I guess.

I sent the files through calibre epub convert again, with, I think, default settings.
The resulting 14 files only totals about 60 MB.
I checked one of the images before and after. the dimensions were about halved, with next to no quality loss - surely not on a reader.

perhaps something to include in your settings.
