Looking for Don Silver thread Toxic Attraction chapters

I wish people would stop using the pdf file format for stories. My eReader hates them, and getting good results when converting them is hell. One could argue that pdf files should only be used for print, not screen. If anyone has a good way of converting pdf to epub, please send me a pm. I realize this thread isn't the right place to discuss technical stuff.

I use calibre and have it configured to automatically convert any file I import into epub format.

Calibre settings:
  • Turn on auto-convert - Preferences - Adding Books - "Automatically convert added books to the preferred output format".
  • Set the preferred output format in Preferences - Behavior - "Preferred output format" and select epub from the drop-down list

I'm using Calibre, but didn't know there was an auto-convert feature. I'll check it out. I do find the resulting epub files lacking in quality though. Paragraphs are split, usually the last line, and words are occasionally concatenated. You also get vertical text sometimes. The file is still readable, but my perfectionist mind finds it annoying.

epub creation is messy because no one adheres the the standards. Add in the variations of different PDF creation software and the PDF standard that doesn't contain text (but vector art instructions that draws the letters) and you have a nightmare.

I scrape some stories into a database and find converting pdf to epub in calibre cleans up the underlying text. I then use the html files within the epub , scrape away the html tags and am usually left with decently clean formatted text. I find copying and pasting text straight from pdfs messes up line breaks and characters thanks to unicode ligatures. TLDR: calibre may not be good at making clean and easy to navigate and read epub files, but they do a good job of converting the text.
