No Account Needed to Download??

Is this intended behaviour? There are not many forums that let you download attachments without having an account.

IDK if it's to encourage just visits but shouldn't we encourage people to create accounts? If you don't have to have an account to download, then you can be a lurker forever. If you have an account then it's easy for you to engage and post, even if it's not content.

In our opinion users who want to download will do just that and leave, inflating the count and not adding anything. So it's not worth locking it.

I guess but if you ever want to monetize the site with advertising, the Google Analytics help but Active/Registered Users are more tangible than just number of unique visitors

I think it's likely that a number of the lurkers would interact once they have an account, at least through liking post, but maybe also volunteering some files they have.
Imo the big jump is creating the account. I was reluctant to do it myself because I'm uncomfortable with any randos having access to my posts and the stuff I share (which isn't much yet admittedly).
On the other hand, the way things are now will lead to cleaner threads, with less clutter.
