"So as soon as I give the sickbay design a detail pass and enhancements, I land in the hospital for a month. Not sure what otherparts of the ship I should definitely leave alone after this, but I think sickbay is done for now. I like Doctor Darling just fine, but I don’t want to spend another week there.

Have you ever noticed it never rains in space? No matter how Earth-like the planet is, we get fog and snow, but almost never waterfalling from the sky. I’ve been wanting to avert that trope for a longtime, and this plot gave me an occasion. Fortunately I also just upgraded my render machine, because rendering rain turns out to be really hardware-intensive.

Next issue will go into more detail about my version of New Yellowstone. Figuring out how the Bova came to be has led me to insights about Terran culture 200 years ago, and a fairly different social & governmental structure from Terra itself. That’ll be relevant as the crew spends some time with them."

Thanks for this post, I really like this hostiore, I'm a fan of science fiction. A little question: how to recognize the order of the images?

Artist's note:
"The idea for this issue started off as ā€œGoodbody falls in love and becomes a farm girl,ā€ but then it absorbed the plot about the Bova rustlers I’d intended to do next issue. So things may be a little disjointed. Writing a one-issue romance is even harder than doing a horror story.

I managed to work in some things that have been cooking for a longtime. Fairchild and Thorvaldsson’s interest in Alfar anime came from Thorvaldsson’s real counterpart. Cookie put in an appearance a while back, but we only now get to see the actual galley. And of course Dialup Hero and I talked about visiting New Yellowstone years ago.

Rejuvenation has been in my head since the beginning. There are two ways Terran technology resists aging; one is monthly drug treatment (that requires Bova milk as an ingredient) slows down aging, and rejuvenation which takes the body apart and rebuilds it as a young adult from the same DNA (leaving the brain intact). Both are restricted to the elites of Terran society and not available off Earth; Star Fleet personnel and civilian sailors like our crew don’t normally have access. But it’s why Lieutenant Galens’ 80-year-old mother looks so well preserved.

We get a little more about Sister Victoria this issue. Most of the Sisters take their names from prominent women in science, engineering, or the arts; Sister Victoria is the ā€œfirst of her name,ā€ having had toflee the censors in her teenage years after her school science project correctly predicted the failure of a major military program that she wasn’t even supposed to know existed. She’s a scientist at heart, not an engineer.

We also get a chance to see more of Ensign Stark. He’s very much a military man, and willing to solve problems with fists or pulser fire. We’ll see how that works out in his new job.

Sonne’s love of detective fiction was mentioned during her captain’s mast hearing in #29. She finally got to be one of the mystery-solving gang! Now I just need to get her artwork on camera.

Ali’s actually done this kind of thing before; making the case against pirates and smugglers is a Star Fleet intelligence officer’s job. He’d never gotten to do the ā€œconfront the guilty party who think she’s gotten away with itā€ thing before, though. He got carried away, because he really didn’t see a lot of difference between the steadholder and the senator. Dee’s faster on the draw than he is, though.

Butcher turns out to be a good guy to know, both if you need to keep your apple harvest from spoiling and if you’re questioning your direction in life. Who’d’ve thought the second part was in him? But he’s been rooming with Goodbody, Morrighan, and Tholi all along; he knows them pretty well by now.

We say goodbye to a good many of the crew here. Most of the Sisters are staying on New Yellowstone, as are a half dozen of the crew who would otherwise have serious illnesses. Personnel issues are going to keep coming up for the next arc.

Something I didn’t find a way to gracefully work in: As part of the program to keep them in their place, Bova are designed to with crippling dyslexia and dyscalculia. They are neurologically unable to learn to read or do math. And they’re all female. I think of these as an earlier version of Dialup Hero’s Bova; Doctor Dey and the Sisters will work on turning them into something closer to his characters."

Artist's note:
"This issue kept changing directions on me. My original focus was going to be on the return of the prize crew, and then events that have now been moved to next issue. But then Riley’s rejuvenation started pulling at me. The man just got thirty years younger, from his perception overnight and after a near-death experience. He’s got a lot on his mind. But then, I decided to take an excellent reader suggestion to do a line-crossing ceremony, and it basically took over the last act. If I didn’t like it, I could’ve kept going, but I think it makes a better conclusion. And a touch of naval tradition. And all of it gave me a chance to catch up on the sexy stuff that’s been back-burnered for a while.

We haven’t heard from the Putti in a while (since #19), but that’s the way they’d want it. They’re private and reclusive, and the Federation would like to ignore them, because they are an interstellar repudiation of the Terran doctrine of racial superiority.

Pvaesh’s line on page 8 and Pvaer’s on page 10 in Aenean is daie, idiomatically ā€œYes,sir.ā€ Senator Nigilia’s Hatian Creole lines: ā€œKoumanmanā€ is an expression analogous to ā€œWoah!ā€ ā€œO mĆØtā€ is ā€œOh my god!ā€ The challenge and response on page 10 is citing rugby championships; I thought of doing the traditional Trek 3D chess moves, but that didn’t feel right for Riley and BarragĆ”n.

ā€œį“ØĀ³ Orionā€ is pronounced ā€œpi three Orion.ā€ I don’t make Bayer notations, I just use them.

A scene I cut from last issue and originally intended for this issue, but it didn’t fit: The officers of Air de Cour were, as promised, let off at a Federation port–New Yellowstone, where they will face charges for rustling the Bova and trying to export them. Both are hanging offenses on New Yellowstone."

"Pirates of the Coal Sack Chapter 36" by DangerousLines:

Artist's note:
"The rescue of the Perseus crew was originally in last issue, and got pushed to this one to make room for the line crossing ceremony. There was more too it, but I cut it because it ended up having a very wrong vibe.

Senator Galens has been studying Phoenix. The Federation has very few multi-racial groups of any kind, and Phoenix is her first encounter with one that isn’t basically humans as overseers of non-human slaves. After her dinner conversation, and her earlier exchange with Jordan, she’s starting to have ideas.

With the Perseus crew, we get some insight into how Tiberius’ takeover of the Federation is going, and what Star Fleet thinks of the Phoenix crew. With the other Aenean ship detected in the Sol system at the same time, the Aeneans are convenient scapegoats for Tiberius’ crackdown; fear and anger at an identifiable out group always help when solidifying a new authoritarian regime. But Harding’s insistence on Star Fleet-like behavior – uniforms, protocol, etc. – gets recognized and pays off some.

So we dive back into Sister Victoria’s transitions, and hint a bit more at what’s going on with the Bosun. Lots of life changes going on with the crew; Goodbody was just the beginning. They have crossed a line."
